Review of the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to be taking a look at the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, part number BWRVK3500-5W. This 5th wheel companion is going to be great for hooking up any 5th wheel trailers that you may have, but also if you have gooseneck trailers, it works great because this goes into gooseneck rails that you can use the gooseneck ball with. What's really nice about this 5th wheel companion is that you can completely remove it from the bed, so when you take it out, you've got a full bed access and there are no cross rails left behind. It features a dual jaw design. It's going to give you 360 degrees of coverage around your king pin. Unlike slide bar jaws, the rounded 2 piece jaw in this 5th wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hook up and a safer quieter ride. In order to operate those dual jaws, you simply remove the pin from the handle here and then this handle is a cam action, so as you pull the handle back, it's going to open up the jaws and then you can slide your king pin in.

Then when that king pin hits and makes pressure, it'll close it and lock around it with that 360 degrees and you can replace your pin. The head on this tilts both front to back and side to side and with the weight of the dual jaw and cam action lever set up, it's not going to lock up on you when you're on uneven ground so you shouldn't have a problem getting your king pin out from your 5th wheel hitch. It features a 5,000 pound vertical load limit and a 20,000 pound gross towing rating. Through the opening in the side rail here, you can see that we've got multiple holes which allows you to give the proper adjustment for whatever your truck's needs are. If you need it to sit a little bit higher, a little bit lower or a little bit further forward or back, this is going to allow you to do that with all those points of adjustability. The overall hitch height can be adjusted from 16-1/4 inches to 18-1/4 inches. Here on the bottom of the rail, it's got these plastic pads that what they do is go down into the low ribs of the bed's corrugation to provide a nice fit and they are adjustable throughout the slot here so then you can tighten them down once you have them lined up inside those low ribs.

No modifications are required to your truck or trailer and no additional parts are required for the system to work. That's going to complete our look at the B&W Companion 5th wheel trailer hitch, part number BWRVK3500-5W.

Hi I have a short bed 2012 gmc 2500hd sierra. I don’t want a slide hitch can I use this kit instead?

@FidelM most short bed owners find that with a fixed hitch (like the B&W you referenced) they they do not have enough clearance between the trailer and the cab to make tight turns, like at regular gas station, or backing into a campground site. If you do not have the desired clearance then a sliding hitch like the Curt # C16411-204 would work for trailers up to 20,000 pounds. There are other options as well, like a "Sidewinder."

I bought a new 2019 Ram 3500 and had the dealership get this hitch installed. They put it behind the axle. Is this proper installation?

Typically the B&W Turnoverball # BWGNRK1320-5W and Companion # BWRVK3500-5W fit slightly in front of or right above the rear axle on a pickup. From what I can tell it looks like the receiver for the gooseneck hitch should be directly above the rear axle but I also recommend checking out the installation instructions linked to the product page for the Turnoverball gooseneck hitch to make sure all of the measurements match up. You can also check out the installation video I've attached for a 2019 Ram 2500.
