Review and How to Install the Bargman Porch or Utility Light with Switch

Hi guys, Zack here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Bargman RV porch light or utility light for enclosed trailers like we have here today. This is going to be an incandescent light that is going to light up the entrance to a trailer or do a pretty decent job of lighting up a campsite, like a patio. The nice thing about this one is it has a light switch on it. We have this one tied to lights on the inside of our trailer. And if we we're working in there and we didn't want this on, we could just simply turn it off but then we can just turn it back on just as easily.

I like this light. I think it's nice having the possibility of turning it on from the inside or the outside, but let's just take a closer look at this one. Now, if you're replacing a light or adding one onto a trailer or putting it into a different area on your trailer, you may be looking at incandescent versus LED. Well, incandescent is going to be a really good light option. I think LED is going to last longer. I really wouldn't want to have to replace bulbs on a trip but it's definitely easy to swap those out.

The LEDs will not only last longer but they're going to take less energy to use. And they're also going to have a little bit more clean, modern look, especially if you have it on the exterior of your trailer, but this is still going to do a good job of lighting up our area. You can see it has this downward angle, so it's going to shoot that light down to the ground, but it also spreads it out. So it's not going to be a harsh spotlight by any means either. Now this is in a black outer case right here. I think it looks good with this trailer and it just has this replaceable lens cover here.

So if you crack that by replacing a bulb and you accidentally break it, you can replace that as well. With this, having a light switch on it, we found that not only do people use these as a porch light, but we've seen them get used over compartment doors. So you don't have to carry a flashlight with you at night. So as long as your main lights are on, you can just turn that on, help you see. If you're hooking up your stuff at night, whenever you get to the campsite and then to save some energy, you can just turn that off.

So, that's really nice that this can be used in all areas of our trailer. Now, when it comes to the size of this, this is a really good sized light. I don't think it's really big and obnoxious but it's not small either by any means, it's going to measure six inches by three and a half by two and a half on its depth at its furthest out point right here. Just to give you an idea if this is going to work out for your application, I turned off the lights in the shop and you can see I've got a little bit of light leaking in through the windows. And I do have a light at the front of the trailer, but this gives you a good idea as to how much this is going to light up. It's going to help out with getting into our door, to help us navigate around our trailer at night. It's by all means not going to light up a full area where we're going to maybe want to hang out and play cards or anything, but it goes out probably five to eight feet. And then it goes to the entire length of the trailer that we're getting a little bit of visibility there. And you can see here in comparison to the LEDs we have on the inside of the trailer, you can see those are a little bit brighter. Now those are different lights, but that just gives you an idea as to this dull look that the incandescent does, but people really like it. People look for these types of lights all the time. The reviews that we've read and gotten back from our customers is that they want a light that isn't super fancy. They want something that's easy to use, easy to install and they know it's going to last for a long time. And this does a really good job of that. Now it's a pretty easy installation. We put this on, just make sure you're unhooking from your battery before you start connecting those wires. But let's just show you how we got this put in place. To begin our installation. I disconnected the battery on my trailer and these wires on the back of my light we're already stripped. I went ahead and stripped the wires that are coming out of my trailer. We are swapping this out for an old light that we had on. Very similar style, but we wanted to put one on that had a switch. I'm going to pop this cover off of here. And it's on there pretty good. You can definitely get it off, but this one's actually on a lot better than a lot of them, but you'll just pop up from the bottom of the light there. And that's where we'll run our screws to mount this in. But first we need to get this connected to our wires. And I'm going to use butt connectors. You can use non heat shrink because we're putting these into our trailer. But if you want to use heat shrink, those are also acceptable. A lot of times, if these lights come with connectors, they will come with wire nuts like in your house. But I don't think that those are best suited for this application because they may come undone as we're going down the road. I'm going to get these slid in place and get these crimped on. We can get everything put in place.Check to make sure we've got a good hold there. Now I've already tested mine. I know that my black wire coming out of my trailer is my power and the white wire is my ground. So I don't need to worry about those. We have this switch on here today. Ours is actually running to a switch on the inside of our trailer so we can have this turned on and off from the inside of our trailer too. But then it's tied into lights on the inside. So if we wanted just those lights on but not this one on the outside, we can always use that switch. So we'll just get this tied into the respective color of our power and ground. Black being power, white being ground. There you go. So now we can get this put in place. Now, a lot of the times this style light will have very similar mounting holes. We've already had a couple of different lights on this trailer before testing a bunch of them out. So I think it's going to line up just fine. But with this, this is aluminum so we didn't need to really put much pressure into it, but we just got a little pilot hole started with a small drill bit. And then we're using some self-tapping like sheet metal screws. And I'm just going to put those in by hand, no need to use any power tools with that. I'll make sure that our wires are lined up in that little recess back in there so we don't smash those up. I'm just going to test to see if those line up with our holes that I've already got drilled and they look like they are exactly right. So I'm just going to put those screws in place. And this has four mounting holes. Two of them though are quite a bit smaller and we've had good luck with these just installing with just the two screws. So we're going to put that in place. You can definitely put all four in though. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it does just fine with just the two. I actually did go back and put four in there because I didn't think that two was holding it in as well as I thought. We've done that before but the four I just put a screw through there and it widened out that hole just a little bit. So it's holding in there good and we can put this back in place and now I can test this out. I hooked up my battery. I'm going to flip my lights on here because I had that tied into a switch and then I'll just get this one turned on and you can see it's working. So that's going to do it for our look at the Bargman incandescent RV porch light or utility light for enclosed trailers.
