Review of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System with Sway Control in a clamp-on design. For demo purposes as well as the quick installation, we're going to be using part number BXW1000. This SwayPro weight distribution system that we're using today is rated for 10,000 pounds maximum gross trailer weight with a maximum 1,000-pound tongue weight. Now we're going to go ahead and take our vehicle and the trailer for a test drive with the original set up. There's no weight distribution or no sway protection or prevention on our set up as it stands. Go ahead and show you how much movement as well as how uneasy the feel the tow vehicle has.

There's a lot of sway or side-to-side motion with the weight of the trailer. Now let's go ahead and begin how we would install our new Blue Ox SwayPro system. We've gone ahead and made sure that our trailer and our tow vehicle are parked in a straight line. We've gone ahead and disconnected the trailer from the tow vehicle. Now that we have everything disconnected, we can go ahead and scoot our tow vehicle forward a little bit. Now that we have the trailer unhitched from the tow vehicle, we can go ahead and level the trailer up itself.

You can see we have our trailer level. With our trailer level, we can turn our attention over to our tow vehicle. We need to remove the existing ball mount. Next, we're going to need to go ahead and measure the coupler here on our trailer and when we measure up, the top here we got 21 inches with the trailer level. There's one additional we need to go over here on the head of the SwayPro. You'll notice there's two little grease fittings here.

You will need to grease these periodically so that your SwayPro gives you long life and everything stays lubricated like it should. Next, were going to go over here and here's our shank that goes into the receiver. You'll notice that it has seven holes on it because it can go either this way or this way. For this particular vehicle, we're going to put it going up. It does have a 0 to 5 inch adjustability built into it so depending on your particular tow vehicle and trailer, it is adjustable.We'll go ahead and put our receiver shank into the receiver.

Put our 5/8 pin and clip in to secure it. Next, we're going to need to put the hitch head under the shank that's in the receiver. Now, we need to get a measurement of the top of the ball which you will need to supply separately. It does not come with the Blue Ox SwayPro system. You need the top of the ball measurement to be one to two inches higher than your coupler height. For our instance today, were at 21 inches on the trailer coupler height so we need to be 22 to 23 inches to the top of the ball. We're just going to temporarily set the ball in the hitch head for now so we can get our adjustment. Go ahead and slide the head onto the receiver. We'll take a couple of the 3/4 inch bolts. Just go through the holes to hold it in place for now. Now that we just have it temporarily set up, we can go ahead and take another measurement and from the ground to the top of the ball here, we are at 23 inches, so we're within the 1 to 2-inch height difference so this looks like thats a good location to secure the head to the receiver shank. While we may have been able to get our height needed with the receiver shank here flipped over to help eliminate any possibility of dragging or hitting something with this part hanging down, we went ahead and flipped it over. As you can see where there's still plenty of clearance. You don't have anything dragging here. It'll all depend on your particular application whether this is facing up or facing down. Now the ball we're using today is an inch and a quarter diameter shank so it fits in the head properly. If your ball only has a 1 inch shank, they do supply a coupler tha'tll go over it like that and drop into place taking up the excess room in the head of the receiver here. The hitch ball the we're using today is a 2-5/16 diameter with a 12,000-pound maximum gross trailer weight rating and its part number 19286. Here's the Loctite that we'll need to add to each of the threads here before we install the 3/4 inch lock nut and 3/4 inch hex nut for each. The red Loctite that we'll be using today is Loctite Thread Locker 262, part number LT37420. Next, we can go ahead, tighten down the hardware here. With the hardware tightened down, we'll go ahead and torque it down to the manufacturers specification. Next, you're going to need to secure the ball to the hitch head. To make things a little bit easier, I'm going to go ahead and flip over our whole set up here in the receiver. It makes things a little bit easier. If you turn it sideways like that, it'll make things a little bit easier to torque down the nut that secures the hitch ball. We'll need to install the lock washer that comes with the ball as well as the nut. We'll go ahead and tighten and torque down the ball to the manufacturers specification. Now that we have the hitch ball torque down, again make sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions for mounting the hitch ball to the head of the receiver.We'll go ahead and turn the whole thing back to the upright position. Line up the hitch pin hole. Put our 5/8 pin back in place as well as the clip. Go ahead and take another quick measurement to make sure we're still where we were before, right at 23 inches still. Our coupler height is at 21 so we should be good. Now, we're ready to go ahead and hook back up to our trailer. We'll go ahead and raise the trailer back up so we can back our tow vehicle underneath the coupler and we can hitch things up. We can go ahead and lower our trailer down under the ball. Next, we're going to need to measure back 29 inches from the center of our coupler along our frame here on our trailer. Go ahead and put a mark here on our trailer. Go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. Here's what our rotating latches look like. They come with this larger bolt but depending on your frame of your trailer, you may need to replace the bolt with this shorter one. It will all depend on how wide your trailer is or if this bolt here is too long and has an obstruction. You do get two of these with the kit as well if you need to replace them. In our particular application, this particular short bolt is too short to work properly so we'll be using the longer bolt that's already installed. You'll notice that it also a jam nut here once everything is installed. We'll go ahead and line up the bolts here with our mark we made. Go ahead and get that centered up.Then go ahead and just hand-tighten down the bolt in the back for now. Go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. Setting up the Blue Ox system itself is identical except for the bars are different and you can tell by the different dots underneath which size kit you have. The way you can tell the difference, just by looking at them it's kind of hard to do that but when you look right here, there's these little dimples or dots. Three dots means that its a 1,000-pound spring bar. Just for comparison, we have one here. It looks identical to it but this one here only has one dot on it. That means its a 550-pound bar. They range anywhere from no dots which is a 350-pound bar all the way up to five dots which is a 2,000-pound bar. After we have our spring bar in, kind of hold up where it would be, i'ts going to be right in the middle.We can go ahead and tighten and torque down the nut to the manufacturers specification. Once that's done, we can go ahead and take the jam nut. Tighten that down as well. Go ahead and tighten down our nut here. Go ahead and torque it down then. Then go ahead and tighten down the jam nut. We'll then go ahead and repeat the same process over on the other side. Let's go over a little more detail how the bar slides in to the head of the hitch. Theres a hole drilled into it right here. Tha'ts what lines up with this little release mechanism right here. You want to make sure that that's always facing up. You'll slide it into place until that drops back down in securing the bar in position. Now let's go ahead and show you how to connect one of the bars in with the latch mechanism. We've gone ahead with the trailer coupler to the ball. We've used the trailer jack to raise up the front end of the trailer as well as help hold up the weight on the back end of the tow vehicle. We've gone up pretty high as you can see. That'll make connecting our bar here a lot easier. A good starting point is to have about three lengths visible on the bottom of this latch mechanism here once it's flipped back into position. Let's go ahead and go over how these work. You pull the handle here and that releases them. Allows them to pivot down and then as you turn it using the handle, locks it back into place. We'll go ahead and show you how one works. Go ahead and take the chain. There's a little groove built into the mechanism here, drops in like that. The chain into position and by having the trailer jacked up like this, it makes it much easier to turn this mechanism right here into position. Take the bar. Turn it counterclockwise until you hear it snap or lock into position. You notice that there's a lot of tension on the bar and it also does have some bow to it or flex to it. That is what it's supposed to do, that is normal. That's what helps with the weight distribution as well as stopping any sway to the trailer. We'll go ahead and repeat that same process over on the other side. With both of the bars connected, we can go ahead and lower the trailer down.We've gone and taken the weight off the jack so all the weight is on the vehicle now. Let's go back over here to our level on the side of trailer. If you'll see here, if you remember from the beginning, we started at four and four with the trailer level not hooked to the tow vehicle at all and now that we are hooked to the tow vehicle, we are level on the trailer. We're pretty well right where we want to be set on the height of the hitch head as well as the tension on the bars. Now we'll go ahead and take it out for another test drive and show you what it looks like with the new Blue Ox SwayPro hooked up to our trailer. Now that we have our new Blue Ox SwayPro system installed, you can see how much better the vehicle handles pulling this trailer. Theres a lot less movement in the vehicle and you have a lot more secure or stable feeling in your tow vehicle as you're going down the road. You don't have any sway or movement of the trailer. Let's go ahead and get a baseline of what our vehicle is without the trailer connected to it at all. From the ground to the bottom of the wheel well, we're about 36-1/4 inches. Come up to the front here and were about 35-1/8 to 35-1/4 inches from the ground to the bottom of the wheel well. Now let's go ahead and take some measurements now that we have our SwayPro set up on the vehicle. From the ground to the bottom of the wheel well, we have 35 inches here at rear. We move up to the front, it appears at the front we have about 35-1/8. We're pretty even with the Blue Ox SwayPro set up on our vehicle and trailer and that'll do it for our quick look as well as installation of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System with sway control and the clamp-on style.
