Review of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System

Hey guys, Kevin here with etrailer. and today we're gonna be taking a look at the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Hitch. So if you're towing a trailer and you experience quite a bit of sag with your rear axle or you're experiencing some trailer sway when you're going on the highway, a weight distribution hitch with some sway control, just like our Blue Ox SwayPro here, is gonna be the solution for you. So as you can see our neighbor's current setup, he does have a weight distribution hitch, but he picked a underrated one for his trailer, so his tongue weight is too much and that system just really couldn't keep up with it. So he's experiencing a ton of sag, which you can see, and it's actually lifting the front axle up as well. He's not getting that traction he really needs on the front tires, and that's where the majority of your braking power is, and also that's gonna cause a lot of wear issues on your tires.

So we're gonna get that corrected today with a correct weighted weight distribution system. So here's our factory ride height for our front. This is what our truck sits at with no weight on it, so up front we're sitting at 40 and 1/2. Let's go ahead and check out the back. So here in the back, looks like we're sitting right at 42 and a half, so we have a two inch lift from the back to our front.

So that's important to keep in mind, because we wanna see exactly how we're gonna sit once we have that weight distribution hitch on there. So as you can see with our weight distribution system in place, we're not experiencing that sag that we have on the back of our truck like we did before, back when he only had the hitch head in place. So now with our weight distribution hitch in place and our spring bar's up, we're gonna go ahead and we'll get a measurement to see where we're sitting at now. So our original ride height without our trailer was 42 and 1/2 and we dropped two inches to 40 and 1/2 at the rear. We'll go see up front.

So up front we we're right at 40 and 1/2 and it looks like we're just a extra eighth up. So right at 40 and 5/8, so that's really good. When I get my giant lift from our trailer weight kinda jacking us up, so we know our headlights are gonna be well within their standard factory ride height, so we're gonna have that on the road. We're not gonna be lifting up and losing our braking power, we're not gonna get that uneven wear on our tires. So one of the great things about this system is that it is a no-drill clamp on bracket so that you don't have to spend a lot of time trying to drill through this real thick frame metal.

The latch is super easy to turn, comes with a little tool that'll allow you to loosen or tighten up your chain. The design of this really is just super simple, all you have to do is get that ninth link up into here, it'll pop right into place and then you can pop it over with the tool and with these chains constantly being under that tension, it's gonna wanna keep your trailer straight with your vehicle so when you start experiencing that sway, it's gonna pull on that chain and that chain's gonna fight it and pull it back straight. So this system's actually gonna come with a shank, it already has a rise or drop that's gonna help fit your specific application as well as a hitch ball. Not all systems come with that so that's one nice thing about this one. If you went with a system that didn't have that, you'd have to also purchase those separately. Up on our head assembly, you can see that there's these greaser fittings and that's gonna allow us to easily swivel in and out as time goes on, you can get some debris or grime or dirt up in here and that's gonna kinda make it harder to swing your bars in and out when you're setting up your system so that grease is gonna help make this a whole lot more smooth. So the nice thing about our sway control here is that with this design our chains are gonna wanna stay straight up and down with our bracket here and so when we start experiencing that sway with our trailer, that chain's gonna fight it back into place so that we don't have all that sway. So one of the things that I like about this system is that our brackets are actually just clamp on, you don't have to spend a lot of time drilling into your frame which ends taking quite a bit of time and kinda ruins your bits. Latching up your spring bars is super easy, it comes with a little tool that you can easily use to pop up your bracket or let it back down slowly so that you don't have that bar just flopping off on you like you typically do with your normal weight distribution hitches. One thing about our spring bars is they are interchangeable with this system so you can go through a variety of different tongue weights, that way you can make sure that you're actually fitting your specific trailer or maybe if you had multiple trailers that all kind of have that same ride height, you could just buy different spring bars and some extra brackets and then have it set up for both trailers. As far as installation goes, it is a fairly easy and straightforward process. It does take a little bit of time just because you have to do some measurements and make sure you have everything kind of set exactly where you need it. So overall, super easy. You can do this at home as long as you have a level ground to set your truck and trailer on and as far as operation goes, it's fairly easy as well. They give you a tool to easily lower or raise your spring bars onto the brackets. So now we've gone over on some of the features of the Blue Ox SwayPro, let me show you how we installed it. So the first step we're gonna need to do is get our trailer level. So if you have the little bubble levels, you don't really trust them, the sure way to do it is to just measure your frame rail distance So from the top of the frame rail to the ground, and then measure it over at the back of your trailer and just get those two bolts equal and then you know that your trailer's level. Now that we have our trailer level, we're gonna go ahead and measure the height of our coupler. So, it's looking like we're sitting right at 19 inches. So now we can go ahead, we're gonna get our shank put into our hitch on our truck and then we can start getting our hitch head in place where it needs to be. Slide our shank right in. Put in our pin and clip, secure it in place. Now if you want you can pick up a locking hitch pin here at etrailer. Just make sure nobody takes off with your brand new weight distribution system. In your kit you're gonna find two bolts, two lock washers and two knuts that we're gonna use to slide through our hitch head and connect it to our shank. So, with this one there's actually a special note just because this is a ram that we're going to place our ball, two inches higher than our coupler height. Typically if you didn't have a ram, you're just gonna do it one inch higher so here's where it's good to have an extra set of hands. And we can get our tape measure out there and see exactly where we need this to sit so we can line up our holes. So just because I know this truck sits so high up I'm gonna try just the very bottom first. So I'm gonna get my bolt with my washer ready. Stick our hitch head on and I'm just gonna stick it to that bottom. And I'm gonna put our other bolts through just to kind of hold it in place so I can measure. And we'll see if we're sitting two inches higher. So right at that bottom there, that puts us right at 21 inches for the top of our ball. So that's great, that's perfect because we're at 19 right here and with our ram we need two inches extra. So we can go ahead, I'm gonna pull this bolt back out, we'll put on our lock washer. Slip that back through. And then we can start hand tightening on our knuts. And then we're gonna torque them down to the specifications listed in the instruction manual So for our next step, we're gonna be mounting up our brackets here and to do that, we're gonna need to measure 29 inches from the center of our coupler back onto our trailer tongue. So looks like right about here. I'm just gonna take a paint marker and mark that up. And then we're gonna go ahead and do the same thing on our other side for our other bracket. This is a good time to really check your wiring make sure that nothing's gonna impede your use of your hitch. You may have to move some things around. There's a few other trailers I've done where I've had to move a breakaway switch or some other wiring out of the way just because it's gonna get clamped in and we don't want to have that. So in your instructions it's going to tell you to place your rotating latch centered onto that mark that we just made. And then it's gonna tell you to hand tighten your bolt in but at the same time, two steps later, they're gonna tell you to put this jam knut on so we're gonna do that all at once. We're gonna stick our bolt in, actually we need to pull that off just a bit. Start getting that in there and then we can get our jam knut on there. I'm gonna get it just started so that the end of the bolt is at the edge of our jam knut. and we will center that up. And we can just hand tighten that for now and then also I'm gonna double check I'm gonna take my tape measure and I'm gonna measure again from our coupler up to that bolt. So just going a quick check again and I'm still centered on that 29. Go ahead and just hand tighten that knut, our jam knut up against our frame along with our bolt here. And then we'll go ahead and do the same thing on the other side. So for our next step, we're going to take our spring bars and insert them on our hitch head. You'll notice there is a halfway drilled out hole that's gonna be facing up because we're gonna want our U bolt for our chain to face up as well. And just slide that right in. And take our pin. Slide that through and secure it with our clip and then we're gonna do the same thing over on this other side. So now that my spring bar is installed we know we have this in the correct place I'm gonna go ahead and tighten down our bolt right here down to the torque settings that are also listed in your instructions. I've got a three quarter wrench down here and I'm tightening up that jam knut up against the actual frame here of our rotating latch and then I'm also tightening down our bolt so while I'm getting this nice and tight and torque down All right. Where it needs to be, now we can go ahead and do this on the other side. So as I was tightening this one up I kept having my bracket lift up off of our trailer tongue. If you start having that happening you're gonna need to loosen that back up make sure that gets back down tight up against the frame before you start torquing it back down. Now that we have all that set up we're gonna go ahead and back up and couple up to our hitch head and we will attach our chains up to our rotating latches. So now with our truck coupled up to our trailer I do still have my jackfoot down but we are going to take our chain links and we're gonna want to make sure that they're sticking straight up. We don't want them twisted or anything like that. Should be going exactly how it is right now all the up. And then we're going to actually release our latches here and then we're going to slide our links into place on here. Now with the directions we're supposed to go nine links down so we're gonna count, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. And we're gonna pull our ninth one into our little opening here. So we'll pull that. We'll take our tool. And then we are just going to pop it back into place. And then we're gonna go over to our other side and do the same process. Now that we're all hooked up with our spring bars I'm gonna take the weight off of our jack and place it on our truck.
