Review of the Curt Cargo Carrier with Ramp


Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Now SUV's crossovers and things like that are becoming really, really popular. So are mobility scooters, mobility chairs, powered wheelchairs, and other items like your snowblowers, your rototillers, things like that that have wheels. And we need a way to carry them behind our SUV. Maybe we don't want to lift them up high enough to get them into the back of the truck. Basically, what we've got here is a ramped cargo carrier.

Now, unlike a lot of its steel counterparts, this is made almost entirely of aluminum and it has a really light weight, that's always been a challenge with these, getting a high capacity out of an aluminum carrier. And they've really done just that. I think this is one of the better looking ramped cargo carriers that we offer, but it's not only going to be for wheeled items. This'll act just like a standard cargo carrier.So, if you need to get some topsoil from the store and get it back home, you need to carry dirty items after a camping trip or after a fishing trip that you don't necessarily want to store inside. Or you just want to get some of your gear outside of the vehicle so you can get some more passengers with you.

It's going to do that job really well too. Now, one thing that this does that we don't often see out of other mobility chair or ramped style carriers like this, this has the ability to tilt up and lock in a stored position right behind your vehicle. Unlike all the other ones, they've got to be hung out there. You try to park in a tighter parking spot, it hangs out into the lane, or maybe you don't want to unload this or take it off of your vehicle each time that you park in the garage.By tilting it up, we save a lot of space and we're able to get into those tighter situations. It's really quite handy.

Now, before we unload the carrier and take a closer look at all the features, let's head out to the test course. We'll go through the different bumps courses that we have, and the slalom to give you a real good idea of how this is going to look and how it's going to move and shift on the back of your vehicle. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering.Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action.

This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot parking garage or driveway. Now CURT put a lot of thought into the design of this, and I really appreciate it. I'm pretty impressed with this carrier as it is. For the ramp, depending on your vehicle, you have three different positions you can store it in. Right now we've got it in the most compact position. It's kind of extended out fully and compressed down.We can put it in this position that just saves us little bit of time when it comes to deploy it, we can go one step further and go into the upright position. Now this is the position you're likely going to have it in as you're traveling when it's loaded, as you're going down the road, that's going to rattle a little bit. So again, CURT came up with a solution for it. We've got a nice rubber strap here, stretch that out, get it connected. It's going to hold it in and really helps to alleviate a lot of that headache. So, to deploy it from this point, first thing we'll do is take off our strap. Second thing we're going to do is pull the pin here. At that point, we're going to start bringing it out and away.See, we've got the rubber feet here that are going to make contact with the ground. That's going to prevent any damage to the carrier from concrete or something like that. But also it will keep you from scratching your driveway or damaging your garage floor as you're trying to load it. Now as you can see, even with the smaller wheels that we have here on our generator, the ramp works really well. It allows us to bring that item up and on, and that's really much better than trying to load this on a different cargo carrier where you'd have to try to pick this generator up, it weighs about 120, 130 pounds, and it's just not ideal to lift. So, having that ramp makes that a much easier process. Now we'll just get it stored back up. We'll strap down our load. Now for the connection points and again, this is something that I like about the carrier, we've got several, of course, on our slats here we could run something around.Well, you notice we've also going to have the two here on the back, the one on the outside corner, and they're going to be in the same position on the front. So see, even with the nice ratchet strap that has a large hook, those are going to be very easy to get connected and allow us to get our gear nice and secure. Now, since we are dealing with wheeled loads very commonly here, you can see they've got nice wide tread plates with good grip.So, if it is a powered item, maybe like your power chair, and you're trying to pull it up on, you should get great traction, both here and on the ramp and the gap between them isn't all that wide. So, even with smaller tires, like our generator earlier, we didn't have to worry about it falling down and through. Now usable inside space of the carriers, generally the most common question we get about these, is it wide enough for my snowblower My tiller is my scooter going to fit up on there without any issues So, we're going to go over that now, basically from the front to the back, well it's stated at about 30 and a half inches, it's almost 30 and seven eighths of an inch wide inside to inside. Outside dimensions, a little less common for folks to ask, but that's going to be about 32 and three quarter. Now our inside usable portion going right from the ramp to the outside here. Again, it's stated at about 50, actually got about 50 and a quarter, but you see how that ramp kind of tilts in a little bitThat will reduce it a little bit down to that 50 inch. And now let's get the furthest outside to the furthest outside measurement. It looks like there we're going to be at about 56 and three quarters of an inch. Now in the compact position or in the stored position like we have it here. We're really reducing that overall length. We don't have to worry about the whole carrier hanging out behind us when we're trying to park or maybe get in our garage without having to remove it. We can just get it in the stored position. And it looks like in this position, going from the center of your hitch pin hole, so that from the center of where your hitch's pin hole is to the outermost edge here, it's going to be about 17 and a half inches. We'll get the inner most edge as well here. It looks like that's going to be about seven and a quarter.So, as long as your hitch pin hole doesn't sit further underneath your vehicle from the rear edge of your bumper, then that seven and a quarter you shouldn't have any issues with contact or the rack coming up and hitting that back bumper. Now in the fully extended position like we have it here, of course it's going to add quite a bit of length to the rear of your vehicle. We're going to measure from the center of that hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our rack here. That's going to give us about 52 and a half inches that we've added. We'll also get that closeness measurement up here, but as you can see a good amount of room to get in and out of here, even with the Forrester's hitch there that sits a little bit further under than what some will. And this closest point we're going to go right to here. It's going to be about 18 inches. Now, as far as the overall construction it's going to be about 95% aluminum, the entire cargo storage area, the ramps, all aluminum construction.So, rust and corrosion shouldn't really be an issue. Some of the points where we need the strength though at our hinge bolts, our hinges up here. Those are important parts. We don't want our ramp to fail. Also our shank and the support that comes under it. That's going to be nice, heavy duty steel so the critical areas where we really want the strength, we've got it. And they've saved weight in a lot of other places for us to make it easier to load into the vehicle and then take off the vehicle when we're done. That doesn't mean though, that they've sacrificed any weight capacity. We still get a 500 pound weight capacity out of it, it does a really good job at that. Not a lot of flex and not a lot of give, which you probably saw in some of the footage we had when we we're out on the test course.Overall, I like the way this looks as compared to a lot of the other ones. I think it's got a nice clean look to it, really well put together. Now this cargo carrier certainly isn't the only one that's going to offer you the ability to get those wheeled items where you want and a lot of space. It's also not the only cargo carrier we have that has a double ramp. With an aluminum construction, similar to what we have here out of the CURT. We have one from MaxxTow. I think this one does a better job at it. I like this one more than what I liked that one, basically with that one, it has an anti-rattle device. So, our movement is minimized just like what we have here, but it's a much harder system to use. It's a sleeve that goes around. It's got two bolts that come up in with jam nuts.And in some situations, depending on the way your hitch is designed, it's just not going to work for you. I also like this one being black, it kind of blends in a little more. I know that's a cosmetic thing that one has a bright aluminum finish, but this position, this folded up more compact position is not something that we have available from MaxxTow. They do not have the folding position so instead of having it nice and compact here, you're going to have that taking up the space back here behind your vehicle the entire time. This is just a couple things to keep in mind. Also, weight can be an issue with these and I think if you're looking at an aluminum type, you're either worried about the corrosion which both of them are going to be great at, or you're looking at weight. And with that one, I'll tell you it's a lot harder to get it installed than this.One it's fixed so we can't compress that weight down and just grab it and put it up and in. So, we kind of got to lean out and over it as we try to get it in, but it's also going to weigh more than this one. I like how this one's a little bit more lightweight. It's going to be a little bit easier for one person to get it in the hitch and all in all. I think this one's going to be the better option than what you'll get out of that MaxxTow just from some of the things we've talked about. Now, the installation process was something we talked about so let me pull this one out of here. We'll show you the process of how to get it installed and what it's going to look like when you do it. And you need a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, but we do get questions about these from people that have the two and a half by two and a half inch receiver tube opening, and it is perfectly fine to use your adapter and use this cargo carrier.So, two inch by two inch is what it's designed for, but with the adapter that comes with your truck, you can easily slide this into the two and a half by two and a half. The threads on the bolt are long enough to where they engage the way they need to. You'll notice we have the threaded pin hole on the shank, and that's what will align with the hitch pin hole in our hitch. The aluminum construction does keep down on the weight and it doesn't really have a balance issue as you load it which I like. You will generally have to get down and look at that pin bolt though to get it lined up properly, and then thread in your bolt. Then we're going to use a 24 millimeter socket, we'll get that secured down. We'll thread in our pin or not thread it in but just place it in. And you want to remember as you're putting in a bolt, just like any other bolt, you always want your lock washer between your flat washer and the head of your bolt.And then you can see that point, it's nice and secure. We don't have any movement or play here at all. It's actually just kind of moving the back of the vehicle side to side. All in all I'm pretty impressed with this carrier..

if i have my wife's scooter loaded on this can I still open the back hatch of my sorento or will i need to drive the scooter down the ramp to open the back of the vehicle?

@CraigP Regarding the DISCONTINUED Curt # C18112 cargo carrier, I don't see anyway that you could open the hatch on your Sorento (or most other vehicles) with a scooter in place. If you need a carrrier with ramp, check out the Reese # PS10401-10402
