Review of the Curt Grip Step Trailer Hitch Mounted Step

Hi, everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we are looking at the Curt Grip Step trailer hitch mounted step here at etrailer. This is a hitch step that fits into your two inch hitches. This is a great addition to your current setup if you need a little extra height. Let's say, you have a hitch on your SUV or if you have a truck like this, you need some height to access your truck bed.

Now, I'm stepping on our hitch step and I can see that the grip portion does feel like it gives me the extra traction on here. One thing I do recommend adding if you're gonna be standing on this for a prolonged period of time is maybe a hitch stabilizing device just to reduce that rattle of that step. So, this is made of both aluminum and steel. Your step itself is gonna be made of a powder coated aluminum, which means this step is lightweight. But then you also have the shank, which is made of a strong, durable steel construction.

Since that goes into your hitch receiver, you want that to be durable. On the ends, you have these plastic end caps, and that's gonna help smooth out the rough edges on the side. That way, if you do come up against your step, you're not scratching yourself. As for how far it sits out from the center of your hitch pin hole to the end of the step, it's 12 1/2 inches. This has a black powder coat finish, which is gonna help resist rust and corrosion.

So, we just had a quick rain shower come through and you can see how we have those water droplets still sticking to our step. That's what makes this a great design. We have these expanded metal treads. So, you can see here that they provide a little bit more grip, a little more traction. And they also help knock off the snow or the mud off of your boots when you do use this step.

This comes with its own stainless steel hitch pin and clip, so you just insert this into your hitch receiver and use that pin and clip to secure it. So, you can use this in the front or the rear of your vehicle, depending on what situation you need to use it with. Now, if you do have it in the front, you are gonna need a front receiver hitch. Now, what we have here is the version of the Grip Step that has a six inch drop. So, let's say, you need a little extra clearance because your tailgate comes out a bit too far, or you need to maneuver around anything above your hitch, this is gonna give you that drop. Let's take some measurements. Your drop here comes from the center of the hitch pin hole to the bottom of your steps. So, you're gonna have six inches from that point. As for the height of this step, we have it at two and an eighth inches tall. The assembly process is relatively simple, especially because it comes with all the hardware you're gonna need to assemble it. So, all I needed to use was a drill in order to insert the self-tapping screws for the end caps, as well as a wrench with a half inch socket. So, if you get confused with how to install this step because it does come with different plates and braces, what I did is I put the support plate on the bottom and your support braces inside the step. That way, they clamped together and hold onto that step and support it as you attach the shank. My final thoughts about this step is I do like how lightweight it is, as well as how it's designed with these metal treads. So, that really helps with adding grip and adding traction. Also, if you got really muddy boots or a lot of snow on it, you can just knock them off here and then you get that height and traction that you want a step for. Now, I do recommend adding the anti-rattle device just to make it completely secure, but other than that, it works great. And that was a look at the Curt Grip Step trailer hitch mounted steps here at etrailer. My name is Evangeline and I hope you enjoyed the journey..
