Review of the Heininger HitchMate TruckStep

Today we'll be taking a look at the Heininger Hitch-Mate Extendable Truck Step, Part No. HE4045. The Heininger truck step is the perfect solution for loading and unloading your truck bed with ease. It's also great for accessing items on the roof of your SUV. Now, we've got our Hitch-Mate in the stored position, as you can see here. This is the position you want it in when your vehicle's in motion. When you're ready to gain access to your cargo, what you want to do is, you come over here to this T pin, pull it out till it clips into place, pull out on your step, then fold it down until that clips into place, giving you a five-and-a-half inch step.

The step extends an additional twelve and a half inches, giving you eighteen inches to the end of your step here. Now, you want to have it in this position for accessing your cargo with your tailgate down. Now, when we got our cargo all loaded up, and we're ready to hit the road, come down here to our step and pull out on it, from its unlocking position, raise it up, pull out our T pin, and push it all the way till it's locked in that way. With our Hitch-Mate pushed all the way in, you can see that it won't interfere with our spare tire or anything else under my vehicle, but this could vary from vehicle to vehicle, so we're going to go over a few measurements here. So from center of hitch pin hole down to the top of our telescoping rail is going to be roughly two and a half inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of our telescoping rail is going to measure roughly nineteen and a half inches.

Just keep that in mind before you mount it on your vehicle. The step itself is a non-slip molded surface to ensure that we get the most traction in all weather. It measures nine and a quarter inches long by five and a half inches wide. The hitch portion of our step is made out of a sturdy steel construction with a nice black powder-coat finish. The telescoping rail portion has got a yellow zinc plating so they're both going to resist rust and corrosion. The whole thing features a 500-pound weight capacity.

Now that we've gone over some of the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to install it. Now, if you look here, we've got two five-inch pinholes, and those are two and a half inches apart. It doesn't really matter which one you use, just as long as you use the one that works best for you. So the measurements that we had before we're with the step all the way in, using the second pinhole. We'll go ahead and line up our pinholes. Once we get those lined up, we'll take our included pin.

Now, if you see here, we've got two ball detents on either side. That's to ensure our pin doesn't slide back out once we've got it through our pinholes. So let's go ahead and slide it in. Now our pin features a quarter-inch hole on the end here, as you can see. That's so you can insert a pin, or even a padlock if you would like, to give a little bit of extra security to your Hitch-Mate step. The padlock we're using today is a Master Lock Padlock, and it's going to be Part No. 131D. That's going to complete our look at the Heininger Hitch-Mate Extendable Truck Step, Part No. HE40445. .
