Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Racks Truck Bed Bike Carrier, part number HRT970. The Hollywood Rack's fork mount is a simple and inexpensive way to transport one bike in your truck bed or trailer. It uses a quick release 9mm skewer that allows for rapid loading and unloading. It's going to work with bikes with both discs and standard brake systems. Through the carrying capacity is for one bike, you can install as many as your truck bed or trailer can handle. The hollowed out center allows you pass a cable lock through if you choose to further secure your bike.
We have plenty of options for a cable lock here at etrailer.com. The whole thing is made out of a black anodize aluminium so it's going to resist the elements. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. Now you can mount this really anywhere in the back of your truck or on your trailer. You can mount it here at the bulkhead, on top, down in the bed or on top of the side rails. Some people prefer a less permanent solution so they'll mount it to a piece of wood in the back of their truck.
I'm just using a 2x10 here, extended to the width of my truck and that's where we're going to mount it. Either way you will have to provide your own hardware. We're just using some heavy duty screws here and we're going right into the wood. You don't want to use any self-tapping screws. When positioning the mount you want to be aware of where your handlebars are going to sit up on your bike, just so they might come in contact with the cab.
We're going to mount it right here in the center. Once we've got it all centered up and where we want it, we can then run our hardware down through. Now I've gone ahead and removed the skewer to make installing a little bit easier. It's just one thing less that will get in the way. Once we've got the location set, let's go ahead and run it through. Once we got one side in we can just make sure that it remains center and go ahead and put our last one in.
Now let's install our skewer. We'll have to take the nut off the other end and this can be installed in either direction, you just want to choose whatever works for you. We're going to go in this side, then we can take the nut, re-install it on the other side. We just want to be sure to leave enough room for our forks to get seated in between the skewer here. Now let's grab our bike. When we bring our bike in, we'll of course want to remove our front tire as our forks will be sitting on the skewer. We'll set it in place, then we can come down and tighten it up. Now the idea is to build a close of our skewer and have a nice, snug fit for our forks, so what we'll need to do is we'll need to tighten it up. We can come around here to the side with a nut and just tighten it up, then over time we'll check it. Now you don't want to have it too tight because you might damage your fork. Make it nice and snug, that way we can still close it up. We just about got it there. We'll come up to our skewer and close it. As you can see, it's nice and solid and it's not going anywhere. Now with our bike secured, let's go ahead and take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Let's go into our slalom. This is going to show side to side action, such as going around corners, or evasive maneuvering. Then on to our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action, such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Hollywood Racks Truck Bed Bike Carrier, part number HRT970.
