Review of the Kuat Beta Folding 2 Bike Rack

Today we're going to be taking a look at the "Kuat Beta Aluminum Folding 2" bike rack for two inch hitches, part number: B202-2. The Kuat Beta is a light weight, aluminum bike rack which is easy to use and can carry up to two bikes. It holds your bike into place at three points with these sturdy straps. It also has an anti sway cradle to keep your bike from moving too far back and forth, possibly making contact with the front. The arms are also narrowly spaced and this is to accommodate different size bikes and types of bikes, such as women's and children's and reducing a need for an adapter bar. However, if you do need an adapter bar, you can find one on from Kuat, part number: UB01.

The cradles themselves can also carry bike frames up to three inches wide. We've gone ahead and taken the bikes off to show you a couple more features. Right now, we have it in what's called the loading position. However, once you park this in your garage or just parking it in general, you may need a little extra clearance in the rear. To do that, we can fold these arms down to give you that. First loosen up the set screw in the back, remove the pin and clip, and fold it down, and reinsert a pin.

If you need to get to the rear hatch of your vehicle or your trunk, this also tilts away from the vehicle, although you can't do this when the bikes are still attached. To do that we'll loosen the thumb screw in the back, then we'll remove our pin and clip at the base like so, and re-insert it along the bottom in this hole. Then we can bring our bike rack forward and it'll be caught by that pin as you can see there. Now we have full access to our rear hatch to get what we need. How this actually attaches to the hitch, we're going to have a pin and clip that are included. Then we'll have this anti rattle knob at the end which will turn to the right to tighten it up and that'll take out the shake and play in the shank.

Also, along the back of the mast, we have this thumb screw that I pointed out earlier. Once you tighten that up, that'll keep the mast nice and sturdy where it needs to be. While this does come with a pin and clip to secure it to your hitch, you can also purchase a hitch lock from Kuat, part number: H101. When you're finish using it, it folds into this nice compact storage which can fit in the rear of your vehicle. As far as your pin and clip is concerned, it has a nice, convenient storage case as well. The bike rack that most customers compare this rack to is the "Thule Parkway 2" bike rack for two inch hitches.

The biggest difference between these two bike racks is really going to be the weight. While the Kuat is made from aluminum and a more lightweight material, the Thule Parkway is made from steel and is just slightly heavier. Between the two racks, I would probably go with the Kuat Beta primarily because it is aluminum and lightweight and folds up completely so I can store it in the back of my vehicle, unlike the Thule Parkway which does not fold up all the way. This does have a maximum weight capacity of 80lbs and has a lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over some of the features of this bike rack, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. To get it unfolded, we'll pull this pin at the base like so, and then we'll actually fold the bottom of it completely around until it comes around like that. Once you have it completely folded back around, we'll re-insert the pin and clip to hold it in position. Next, we'll go ahead and take our bike rack, feed it into our hitch, and line up the pin holes to install our two inch pin and clip that is included. Push our two inch pin through. We'll come to the end here and tighten down our anti rattle knob. Once this is tightened down, this will take out the shake and play in the shank and make for a smoother ride while you're driving. Looks like we're good to go. Next we'll fold out our arms so we can get ready to load up our bikes by pulling out this pin here on the side. Just fold it out like so. Line up the hole here and re-insert that pin and clip. We'll re-insert our pin with that in place and then we'll tighten down our set screw here to make sure the arms will stay in place. Next, go ahead and undo our straps. To do that, you'll just push the top of the tab here and like so that will loosen them up. We'll do this for both sets of cradles. Next we'll go ahead and load up our bike. We'll set it into place, line up our anti sway cradle here, tighten that down as well as our other straps and now we can install our second bike pretty much following the same steps as the previous one. Here it is on our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next we're at the alternating speed bumps which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb, or pothole, or driving over uneven pavement. Finally we have the full speed bumps where we'll see the up and down action which is just like driving out of a parking lot garage or driveway. There you have it for the "Kuat Beta Aluminum Folding 2" bike rack for two inch hitches, part number: B202-2.
