Review of the Kuat Hitch Bike Racks on a 2016 Ford Explorer

Today on our 2016 Ford Explorer, we're doing a test fit of the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 platform style 2 bike rack. That part number is, SH22B. Now, this comes in multiple different colors. Here we have the black. Also comes in a grey and a pearl color. Also, comes with a cable lock and wheel strap, although we are not using those today.

Now, the first thing we're going to go over is one of our key features. We can actually tilt this rack away from our vehicle with it fully loaded. We're going to pull down on this black lever here. That tilts down, and we'll use our key to open up our back hatch area, see if we have enough clearance to gain access. It looks like we have full clearance. Now, here at our closest point between the handlebars and the vehicle, you'll see that we still have a few inches there.

Our handlebars are about 9 1/2 inches, so if yours are a little longer you shouldn't have to worry about those getting in the way of your hatch door. Then to put our bike rack back into place, you'll simply lift up. As for how our bike is secured down, the back we have a cam buckle strap. It's going to secure our back tire into place. That's quick and easy to remove.

Then at the front we have our wheel hook. Which, is going to sit either in front of our brakes or in front of our frame depending on how our bike is made. What's great about this rack is that it has no frame contact whatsoever. We'll just lift that up and push it out of the way. We can pull our bike off and set it off to the side. Another great feature of this rack is that our cradles for the front tire actually fold down into a more compact position, so you don't have to worry about it being in the way of your vehicle.

Then we'll also replace our wheel hook so that is out of the way as well. A few measurements that might help. First, is going to be our overall. We're going to have about 32 inches added to our vehicle. Our ground clearance, looks to be about 21 inches. Our closest point, looks to be about 7 1/2 inches away. Now, again at this point we would gain access to hatch, but we're just going to move on. Again, pulling down on that lever we're going to fold our bike rack up against our vehicle. You'll see here it's got plenty of room in between the bike rack and the vehicle. We're not going to have any movement there, so we shouldn't have to worry about it making contact with the back portion. Overall now we're only adding about 14 inches and our ground clearance is going to be about 13 1/2 inches. As for our hitch, this works with 2 inch hitches only. It comes with a pin and lock to prevent theft and tampering. You don't have to worry about that. We also have an anti rattle device at the back, which is easy to use. Just a knob that's going to tighten up everything in our shank to prevent any movement. That's going to be our completed look at the Kuat Sherpa 2.0. part number SH22B on our 2016 Ford Explorer.Speaker 2: This is our test course. Lets start with the slalom. This shows side to side action such as, turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action such as hitting curbs, potholes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Last of all the solid speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as, driving through a parking lot or parking garage, or driving in and out of a driveway.
