Review of the Kuat Hitch Bike Racks on a 2021 Toyota 4Runner

What's going on everybody Adam here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Kuat Sherpa, on our 2021 Toyota RAV4. So, if you're looking for a really attractive looking rack, this is gonna be one that I like, 'cause it has a lot of options. One, we're gonna have color options. This is a gun metal gray, but we're also gonna have it in black and pearl as well. So, the pearl would really go well with this white 4Runner, and also we have the 2-inch version, but there is going to be a an inch and a quarter version as well.

So, pick whatever is gonna work best for you. The nice thing about this is, it's gonna be great for your carbon fiber bikes, because we have a wheel hook on the front. And it's also gonna have 40 pounds per bike, so its gonna be able to carry pretty much any bike besides your fat tire bikes or, your electric bikes. So, it's gonna have a 3-inch tire width maximum, so just make sure not to exceed that. But it's really nice because we can fit the bigger bikes but if you have kiddos, we have an adaptor that's gonna allow us to fit wheel sizes probably 20 inches to 25.

But then, this right here, is gonna be from 25 to 29. So, a lot of different adjustments and a bunch of neat features that I like. First one is, the tilt feature. And a little lever, just pull that down. And this just gonna allow you to access the back of your 4Runner.

Whenever your bike is still installed, it's always nice. We don't have any contacts so we can store stuff in the back, and grab food for the ride. Or if you're on a trip, or something like that. To put it back into position, all we gotta do, is lift it up, it snaps into place. And it's really simple to get this bike of the rack.

All we really have to do is go ahead and down here, press our little tab and push the screw. I did this one first, just because it doesn't hold the bike upright. It just helps that vertical movement. And we are gonna accept wheel bases up to 47 inches. So, our road bike works really well. When it comes to the wheel hook, press this little knob, put a hand on your bike, go up, fold out. And we are ready to go. With any hitch mounted accessory, we are gonna add a little bit of length to the back of the vehicle. So, once we take this down, fold this down. Go ahead and measure that. So, on our 4Runner, from the bumper to the farthest nest point, its about 35 and a half inches, you can break that down a little bit. But before I do that, I wanna show you this little mechanism here. In does come with a cable lock. So, the cables gonna go around all your bike frames and click in here. And we're gonna get keys on that kit. And that's gonna match our locking core on our hitch. But, we'll get to that later. So, let's go ahead and fold this up. See much space we're saving. That's gonna break it down to about, 18 inches from the bumper to our anti- rattle knob. One thing to think about, we do have a rear view camera on this vehicle. And we are gonna obstruct the view a little bit, but we're still gonna be able to see through. So its not gonna completely take that out, we can still use it. It's just gonna be not as useful. So, let's go take a look at the anti- rattle knob. I really like this just because its a lot easier. Sometimes, you get anti-rattle bolt with it threaded. And, it just take a little bit longer to install. And also, it's just, you can possibly cross thread them. With this, its super easy. As you can see, it's extremely tight right now. But as start to go left, it's gonna loosen that out a little bit. That's what we usually get, but we have a little locking core and a pin on the end here, so that's all we really need to do, put the locking core on after we put the pin through. And then, kinda wiggle it as returning. And it's gonna lock that into place. Just like that. It is gonna have a straight shank, so it's gonna have pretty much level with the inside bottom lift of your hitch receiver. So, if you wanna see how much ground clearance she have, just measure from there. But, it's gonna be about 17 and a half inches and it's gonna stick out about 18 and a quarter inches from the center of the hitch pin hole. So, I don't think we'll have any issues bottoming out if you have a really aggressive steep driveway. And it doesn't stick out too far, so I don't think anybody is gonna run into it. If you're in the parking lot or something like that. All in all, I like the bike rack. If you have an electric bike or fat tire bike, I will definitely go with the NV 2.0. But, this is really cool just because of all the color options that we have. And it looks very good. All in all, I like this bike rack, and I think you will too. Again, it was the Kuat Sherpa, on our 2021 Toyota 4Runner. Narrator This is our test course. Let's start with a swirl. This show side to side action such us, turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then on to our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action such as, hitting curves, pot holes, road debris, or uneven pavement. And last of all, the solid speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as, driving to your parking lot or parking garage. Or driving in and out of the driveway..
