Review of the Malone Roof Box on a 2014 Volkswagen Passat

Speaker 1: Today on our 2014 Volkswagen Passat, we're going to be test fitting the Malone Rooftop Cargo Box, and that's going to be part number MPG902.If we take a look at some of the features visible from standing right here, we're going to see that it has a very nice aerodynamic shape to it. So while it's installed in your traveling, it's going to cut down on wind noise and drag while it's up there, and your gas mileage shouldn't be affected too much.If we take a look from the front of the vehicle, we're going to see that it's a very narrow cargo box, and so while we have it pushed to the right side of our vehicle, we're going to see on the other side we could fit another accessory even on our smaller sedan. If you wanted to put a bike rack up there, you could choose to do that. You just want to be sure you double check the weight that you might have in your cargo box or on the other accessory and make sure that the roof rack and the vehicle roof can handle that weight. When we come to the back of the vehicle, we're going to see that even with our cargo box installed, we have no problem trying to access the trunk of our vehicle. You can see there's plenty of space, so you're going to have no problem right there. We're going to see we have four different points of contact where our cargo box is secured to the roof rack.

We're going to have these clamps that kind of look like hooks that come out from the bottom of our cargo box and wrap around our crossbars right here, and they simply tighten from the inside. We have four hooks, two on the back and two on the front. I'll show you how to put the last hook on in a little bit. These hooks also are adjustable back and forth to meet a wide variety of spreads you might have on your different roof rack systems. These clamps also can accommodate to a lot of different variety of different crossbars you might have whether it's an aftermarket roof rack or even a factory style roof rack. You can see we have aerodynamic crossbars right here, but it can also fit elliptical style, square bars, or even round bars.

You just want to be sure to keep in mind that the minimum size bar required to fit this cargo box is 1" wide by 3/4" tall. So make sure you have big enough crossbars to be able to fit this cargo box.We take a look on the inside. I'm going to come over here and see this lock right here. Now this is how we open it. You will receive a set of keys with your cargo box.

You simply just insert the key, turn it to the right to unlock it, and we can simply lift up our lid, and it's going to keep itself open by these to arms on the front and the back. I'm going to grab my ladder right here, so I can step up and show you guys some features on the inside. Now even though this is a narrow cargo box, you're still going to have 6 cubit feet of space to use up here, which is still a lot of room, especially for a smaller vehicle like this sedan, for you to be hauling. Now I'm going to show you guys how to install the last clamp. I'm going to step in closer with my ladder. So when we get up here, we're going to see that we have our other hook.

We have the tightening bolts, we have the bracket that goes between the bolt of the hook and the tightening bolt, and then we have a tightening tool right here for when we get it tight enough with our hand we can turn it a few times with that.So how we're going to start, we're going to grab our hook. Want to come to the bottom side of our cargo box and simple feed it up through that hole like so. You want to hold it there. Want to grab our bracket. Want to slide that over like so. Now we can grab our tightening bolt. You want to make sure you thread it onto the bolt. Once you get it threaded, can start tightening it down. You want to make sure that the bracket stays with this edge right here. You don't want it to turn like that. You need to have it flush with the edge.So once we get it tight enough with our hands, we're going to grab out tightening tool and tighten it a few more times. Now that we have that, we can grab out tightening tool and insert those prongs right there and just turn it more. As you can see, our rooftop box is secure to our roof rack. You can store your tightening tool in the cargo box if you choose or you can store it in your vehicle, whatever you prefer. Now up top inside, you are going to get a set a straps for if you don't have your cargo box full, you could strap down your items that you have inside so they don't shift too much while you're traveling. How we're going to enclose our box is we're simply just going to grab the top of our lid and pull down until the arms break down, and it just slides right over that lip. Once you're done you can just lock it like so, and you're all good to go. Now, this rooftop cargo box can open from both sides. You're going to have the same exact system with a lock on the other side of our cargo box, and if you choose to put it on the left side of your vehicle, you can open it from that side too.The weight capacity for this cargo box is 165 pounds, but you do want to be sure to double check your vehicle manual and the instructions for your roof rack to make sure that they both can handle the weight, also keeping in mind that our rooftop cargo box does weigh 26 pounds. There you have it for the Malone Rooftop Cargo Box on our 2014 Volkswagen Passat.
