Review of the Rhino Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rhino Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack, part number RRrBC050. The low-profile hybrid lets you carry one bike on the roof of your vehicle, without making any frame contact. It secures our bike in four places for stability. We have the front and rear wheel straps, the large wheel hook, and then we have the wheel stop. The ratcheting wheel hook is padded for grip, and will work with tire diameters from 20 inches, all the way up to 29 inches. The ratcheting handle features ergonomic grips with a pinch-free trigger, so it's easy to operate.

It features three locks to secure our bike in our bike rack. We've got one here on the top, to secure our bike rack to our crossbars, one here on the ratcheting handle, so our trigger can't be tampered with, and then one with our cable lock. Two keys are included. When not in use, everything folds flat to minimize wind noise and drag. The 64-inch-long wheel tray accommodates skinny road bike tires, all the way up to a 2.7-inch-wide mountain bike tire. It's length is going to accommodate a wide variety of wheel bases.

Our ratcheting straps are adjustable along the sides of the wheel tray, to accommodate those varying wheel bases. It's made out of a lightweight aluminum with a black-powder-coat finish, so it's going to be durable and rust resistant. It's a universal installation. It's going to fit most round, square, arrow, elliptical, and most factory roof rack systems. The rear hardware and the ratcheting hook are reversible, so it can be mounted on the driver's side or the passenger's side.

It also features a weight capacity of 45 pounds. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. First, let's go ahead and set a place on our roof rack. We'll want to be sure that the top portion of our clamp sits right on our roof rack, and that our straps go right underneath. The next thing we want to do is, we want to be sure that our straps are loosened up enough that we can hook them underneath. We can do that by accessing this top panel here.

Let's go ahead and take it off, and set that aside. Then we'll take our included tool, and we can loosen that up. I'll show you the way we're going to hook it, because you won't be able to see it. Underneath the bar, we're going to hook it right here, on both sides. Let's lay it back down. We'll bring it around, and then we'll hook it in place, just like that. The muscles are in place. Let's go ahead and tighten them down. We'll grab our included tool, and tighten this bolt down, right here. What that's doing is, it's drawing the straps up underneath, making a nice, snug fit. There's no reason to over-tighten. Once you've got it nice and snug, you can check it, to make sure it's not going to move, and then we've got it. Then lock it up. We want to be sure to put this end in first. We can snap it in place, grab our keys, lock it up, and we're all set. Now let's do the rear clamp. We're going to undo it with my hand here, take off that bottom portion of the clamp. It's going to lift up slightly on the bike rack. Then slide that so it's center over the cross wire. We can bring that bottom portion of the clamp back in, replace our hardware, and tighten it down. We want to be sure to tighten these down evenly. That way, we get a nice, snug fit all around. Now we'll get ready to load up our bike. We'll want to make sure that our wheel hook is all the way up and out of the way, forward. We'll also want to make sure that both front and rear straps are undone. Then finally, our wheel stop. Raise that up until it snaps into place. Now let's grab our bike. We'll bring our bike up. We want to be sure to set it, the whole thing, in the tray. We want to make sure that our front tire comes all the way back to our wheel stop here. We can hold our bike in place, bring up our hook right in front of our breaks, bring it down, and that's going to hold it in place for us. Now we can do our front and rear wheel straps. We'll want to be sure and slide it to where it's center with our wheel. We'll bring that through, pull that down. Now let's secure it with our included cable lock. I'm going to go through the wheel and through the frame. Put it through the loop, and then secure it to the arm. Bring it down here, put it there, hold it in place with our finger, then secure the lock. With everything all loaded up, let's go ahead and take it on our test course, and see how it performs. This is our test course. Let's start with the small one. This shows side-to-side action, such as turning corners for evasive maneuvering. Then on to our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action, such as hitting curbs, potholes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Last of all, the solid speed bumps. This shows up-and-down action such as driving through a parking lot or parking garage. We're driving in and out the driveway. That's going to complete our look at the Rhino Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack, part number RRRBC050.

I am interested in mounting the Rhino Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack to my Yakima LoadWarrior, so I was wondering if you could confirm for me that these products are compatible. Also, if you could please supply the maximum width of the Rhino Rack Hybrid Roof Bike Rack when it is resting on the roof without a bike, that would also be very helpful, since I want to add it to my roof between two racks that are already attached to my LoadWarrior. Technically the Yakima LoadWarrior is only rated for use with Yakima products but since the Rhino-Rack Hybrid # RRRBC050 is compatible with round bars it will fit the adapter bars on your cargo basket. This bike rack measures 64" long x 12" wide x 2" tall in the stored position.
