Review of the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform Mounting Kit

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform Mounting Kit for heavy duty crossbars. Part number RR43105. This kit works with any Pioneer Platform, to adapt it to your heavy duty crossbars. You'll need to use one kit per crossbar. For example, we're using two crossbars here today, so we picked up two kits. These adapters are made out of a strong powder coated steel, so they're going to resist corrosion.

They're easy to install. Let's show you that now. Now that we've gone over the features I'll go ahead and show you how to use them. Now your going to want to attach these to your Pioneer Platform before you put your platform up on your heavy duty crossbars. They're very easy to install.

The channel nuts slide into the brace bar here. Then you just tighten down the bolt with a 5/8 inch wrench or socket, and it squeezes the channel nut up between the brace bar. Then it's tight. The opposite side of our plate has the same set up only reversed. This is what slides into our heavy duty crossbars, and you tighten it down on top. Then we can get an extra set of hands to help us to get it installed.

I'm just going to slide it on. Then we'll set it in place within our bars. About like that. You'll of course want to have your weatherstripping removed from your heavy duty crossbar, and then you'll want to make sure that the channel nut sits down within the channel. With all of the channel nuts in place, we can go through and tighten them all up.

With everything all tightened down, we can use our Pioneer Platform for anything we need. That's going to complete our look at the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform Mounting Kit for heavy duty crossbars. Part number RR43105.

Can this part (RR43105) be used to connect a Rhino Rack Pioneer platform to an Exposed Racks Click-in mounting bracket?

Unfortunately they will not. The slots for the mounting plate are about 3/4" wide while the bolts for the platform mounting kit are 1" wide. It looks like the Pioneer Platform Rack with universal mounting might possibly work. It can fit the Rhino-Rack Vortex crossbars which have a height of 3/16" while the Exposed Racks height is 1/4" so I'm pretty sure that 1/16" will allow you to just use the standard clamping system.

Thanks for the response but I think I need a little more help. I have a pioneer platform item # 42108BF. I have no mounting hardware, just the platform. I'm trying to determine how to attached that platform to the EXPOSED RACKS click-in rack system item # 8-00-9704-RD on your website. I need the exposed racks set up as well a way to connect the platform to the click-in set up. Can you send me link or reference to products that will work for this? Thanks

@JeffreyB I went ahead and reached out to Rhino-Racks and they said that the hardware for their universal mounting platform racks isn't available separately and that you'd need to get a backbone mounting kit setup for your application. This will make using an Exposed Rack a bit tricky so you'll either need to purchase one of the Pioneer Racks that come with the universal mounting hardware, use the backbone setup, or use a different platform system. If you end up going with a different platform system I recommend the Inno # INA520 because it is really easy to use.
