Review of the Rhino-Rack Roof Mounted Steel Cargo Basket

Today we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Rhino Rack roof mounted steel cargo basket, part number RNCB02. This extra large roof top cargo basket is great for transporting your luggage, your sporting goods equipment, or your camping equipment, and to keep it out of your vehicle to make more space for you and your family as you travel. It's also good for keeping anything damp or dirty that you don't want to have in your vehicle, as well. With it loaded onto our vehicle here, you can see that you don't have to remove the antenna in the back, and we have plenty of clearance between the hatch itself, and the cargo basket. The basket does come with a fairing, and that's going to cut down your wind noise, and drag. It also has a universal mounting kit that can fit arrow, elliptical, most factory bars, and square bars. However, this will not work with Rhino Rack's heavy duty bars. Now, for the overall dimensions, it's going to be 57 inches long, by 42 13/16 inches wide, by 5 7/8 inches tall.

Now, the interior dimensions are going to be 53 inches long, by 39 1/4 wide. To ensure that your cross bars don't get damaged while installing it, the mounting kits themselves are padded. Now, this does have a carrying capacity of 165 pounds. Although, you want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure it can withstand that kind of weight on the roof. This cargo basket can work with crossbar spreads between 25 1/2 inches to 43 inches. Now, the crossbar spread is the measurement from center, to center of the bars.

This is made from a heavy duty steel construction, and has a black powder coat finish, which will resist corrosion. It also has a limited warranty. Those who have bought the Rhino rack cargo basket, have also been taking a look at the roller cargo basket. Now, there's a few differences here, mainly being in carrying capacities. While the roller can carry about 130 pounds, this can carry 165 pounds, and just has a greater amount of space to work with on your roof. The biggest different between them is going to be the price, where this is slightly more expense, but with that cost, you do get a little more bang for your buck. Now that we've gone over some of the features, we'll show you how it installs.

We'll first take the cargo basket, and set it onto our roof rack. There's really no set position at this point, we just want to get it on, and get it as straight as possible, because we don't want it crooked when we tighten it down. Now, we'll go ahead and start installing our mounting kit. We'll this piece which will sit at the top of our roof rack, lift up a little bit, and place it in between these two bars up on the top. We'll repeat this for the other ones as well. Now, we'll take top part of our mounting kit, and place that where the bracket we just put in place, just push down, and the two tabs will poke through.

We'll repeat this for the other kits as well. Next, we'll install the rest of our mounting kit. We'll install this bottom part, here. To do that, we'll have to put these two screws up through the top plate and then screw them into the bottom part of the mounting kit. Line up the holes with the two screws, and then tighten them down, using the included Alan tool. Go back and forth in tightening these down, so it tightens a little evenly. We get it nice and snug up against the roof rack, then we'll repeat this process for the other mounting kits. Now that we've got our roof basket secured to your roof rack, we can load it up with our gear. You can tie it down with a number of things, anywhere from Rhino rack straps, to your basic cam buckle straps. There you have it for the Rhino rack roof mounted steel cargo basket, part number RNCB02.
