Review of the Rightline Ace Jr Rooftop Cargo Bag

What's up everybody, it's AJ at Today we're gonna be checking out the Rightline H Junior rooftop cargo bag, that's gonna be 10 cubic feet. It's going to be great for storing all your extra stuff that you can't really fit in the vehicle. And that's making more leg space for everybody in the car. Making those long trips a little bit better. So you can go ahead and jam some clothes or bags up here in this top one, just to carry that a little bit more on the trip.

Let's check it out. Shows a few different ways that this can attach to the top of your vehicle. The way we're using today is with raised rails. So it's wrapped around here. You get the strap that's already in the loop.

So you run it through itself and run it through the buckle up here and then you can pull it nice and tight. And see I'm pushing the bag, it's not moving here. Pretty sure I can shake the whole vehicle back and forth by the straps, so that shows you how tight this is on there. So if you we're worried about it going somewhere, it's not going to. Now there's other options of, and we'll show you those in a little bit on how they attach.

There's a hook that would come in. If we didn't have raised rails, it would hooked into your door jams here and go and eat the weather seal. And then even if you have a roof rack on there, let's say you have bars up front and behind you have buckles on the front and the back of our bag. You could go forward and wrap the same straps around that way and get it tight. So, plenty of options, with pretty much any vehicle.

The next thing we're going about is the 10 cubic feet. I know I said that, that doesn't mean much to me, I can't visualize that. I'd rather load it up with stuff. So, here's all the stuff that we had in the bag, the one I was talking about, I'm going to show you how to load it and how much space we actually have. I know all this fits. So, this is pretty impressive right away just looking at all of this pile, knowing that this is going to go up in that bag on that roof. So let's get started. So just got some backpacks here, some duffle bags, some sleeping bags I'm just going to throw up in there and kinda get them situated inside. Definitely want to set the bag up on the roof first, instead of loading it down here and then loading it up on the top. There you go, just going to bring the top back over, and zip it up. As you can see you zip it up, there's still a little bit of room. It can get a little bit taller there so you can probably put a couple more bags to pump it up completely and fill it to the brim. Now before I set the bag up on the roof, I did get this non-slip pad here that Rightline also sells. I recommend putting that down underneath the bag. Now it's not going to go anywhere when you've got it all strapped down, but it just helps. It's kind of like a more grippy material and to protect your roof here. So there's not going to have any scratches or any issues with this pad down there first. So once you put the pad down, you can set the bag down. We've already filled it up, so now it's time to zip it up. So we're going to come over here on the ends and just start the zipper and the bag opens on both sides. It going to go over on this side, that side and the backside, not the front. So zip, this zipper, there's going to be two zippers, towards the middle here on the back, and we do the same thing on the other side. If you look here, it's nice that the zipper is nice and sealed up. You have this flap that's going to go over there, we have a hook and loop. So as I go around there we're gonna reattach attach that and that's just further protection to keep the water out of it. So you see how high the zipper is actually all the way up here. So way up at the top of this flap is where the zipper is. So, it's going to be hard for that water to get to it being all the way up there. We've got to all zipped up, I got both zippers here on the backside or underneath this flap on the top of the material. It's a 600 denier polyester woven polyester bag, and then also it's UV protected. So it can handle up to 50 SPF. And the other thing is it's water resistance, so water's just going to beat up and roll off of that. I've already talked about this flap and how it keeps it nice and protected, so. And it really is made to be up on your roof and stay up on here for those long trips. When it's fully filled out, the dimensions are going to be about 30 inches wide, 36 inches long, and then 16 inches tall. So that's how much space you have to work with when loading it up. Now we're ready to tighten it down. So this is where the straps go right when you get them, it's got the metal hooks on the end already. We're not going to use them cause we're going to wrap our strap around the raised rails here. So, just go ahead and remove that hook. It's actually pretty easy cause it's got that loop that's built in. We've got the hook out here so you don't need it. We'll show you how to use that when we put it on a regular roof with nothing on there, a naked roof. So that out of the way, all we got to do is, this is the built-in loop I was talking about, it's nice. It's really easy to use this because you just got to run the strap around our raised rail and then run our strap through that loop. And it gets a hold right here that can't really be broken. It's an endless loop there see no run up at the top to one of our buckles. So we're gonna use the buckles on the side because that's where the rails we're tying it to are, later on we'll put her on a factory roof and I'll use the front buckles. But right now we're just gonna use these. So you just run it through the back end. Let's make sure this strap isn't twisted though, there we go, that looks better. So we're gonna go through the back end first, and then through the front. Then we can just pull down to get it nice and tight. Good way to check if it's right, is that you can't just loosen it right away. You see how tight it keeps it because its teeth are grabbing in there. So it can't just easily come untight or loosen, sorry. So me even pulling on that buckle, it's not coming through. So, hold that nice and tight. I'm gonna repeat that one, that same thing on the back buckle and then we can tie up our extra strap. But now we're going to put it on my car and I have factory roof bars on there. So I'm gonna show you how to attach to there versus what we did on the raised rail. You've got the bags thrown up here, I attached all three other straps, we got the last one. So this one we're going to use the front and back buckles here. Same way we did before, run it through, pull it tight and there we go. I'm going to tie up the extra strap here so you can see it works just as well. Hook it up to the factory roof rack or any kind of roof rack bars you have. The front and the back buckles work really well. I can shake the bag here, it's not going anywhere. If I grabbed the straps, I can shake the whole Envoy back and forth. So you know that your back's going to be secure. Now let's check it out on a naked roof. We've got a Honda CRV right here. We're gonna see if it fits in the door jam. It is kind of random, which ones it works with. It doesn't always work. I don't like this method of attaching to your vehicle, to be honest, I'd rather wrap it around the side rails or a roof rack cause I feel like the loop system works really well. The clips don't work out so well. So what we're going to do is run our strap, do this part here. Then the same way we put around the raised rail, we'll go through that loop and get that pulled. And get a good knot in there, there we go. So now that's set up. So we already have one in place I ran to the top and what we want to do is put this in the door jam. So there's a couple of problems here with that. I want you to go over the whole weatherstrip, but that clip isn't big yet to work. So, it's not going to go in there like it says it's supposed to. I gotta get it a little more loose. That's not a good grip either, I'm not impressed with that. I don't think that's going to hold plus pushing down on your weatherstrip probably isn't good for not letting water into your vehicle or even slamming the door on that. Another method you could do is pull the weather strip down and sure you get a great connection right here. You can pull that really tight there. It's not going to come off, but if you push this back up there, that's bulging out, and that's going to have issues with leaking rain as well not to mention slamming the door on that. You don't want to scratch up the inside of your paint. So like I said before, don't really like this method, it's rare that we find a vehicle that it actually works with, this CRV is pretty popular, you'd think it would work better with this, but not so much on this one. So last thing, when we're not using it, you can kinda store the accessories. So you got the mat and the clips and stuff inside, and you zip it up you see how flat it gets . It really doesn't take up that much space. I like that because the other alternatives are a cargo basket on the roof or even a rooftop box. But those are gonna take up a lot of space in the garage or wherever you're trying to store them. And they're not compact with this bag. They're not gonna use it more than a couple of times a year. it's not going to take up that much space. If you push it back down like this, get that flap down, let some air out of it, and then fold it up, fold it up, roll it up whatever you want to do. You can get it this compact and store it wherever you want. You want to put it in your garage somewhere, if you just want to put it in the back of your vehicle, it'll all stay there nice and neat and out of the way. So overall I think I do like the rooftop bag as long as you got the bars to attach it to. I wasn't impressed with the naked roof just because we're trying a few different vehicles in the parking lot. We weren't really able to get away with those door jambs and I don't really trust that going that road. There's a lot of complaints of water getting in and stuff through the sides where those weather strips are. So that's part of it, I didn't really like that. But if you hook it up to the rails, I think it's got a nice secure connection and again, if you're not doing it all the time, if we're going to use it a couple of times a year, I think it's really better than getting the cargo basket that goes on top of your roof with the roof rack or getting a hard top rooftop box. Those are little more pricey and you're going to have to have room to store those. This is far easier, just have it condensed back of your vehicle, in your basement and your garage. Doesn't take up much space and it's there when you need it. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out. And I hope this helps..
