Review of the Swagman Hitch Bike Racks on a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan

Today on our 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan we're doing a test fit of the Swagman XT2 platform-style 2-bike rack. That part number is S64650. We're going to start by going over how we secure our bike into place. Then we'll go over some features and take a few measurements. How we secure our bike into place, we have two wheel cradles, one for the front tire and one for the back. Then we have our frame hook.

This is what's really going to hold our bike down into our wheel cradles. Now you may notice on this bike rack compared to others we don't have any straps at our tires. You can tell you for a fact that you won't have to worry about it. With my own personal experience of this bike rack and reading the reviews, a lot of people say that they we're a little worried but it does a very good job with that frame hook holding our bike in place. We're just going to push and lift up on that hook. Then we can pull our bike off and set it off to the side.

With that out of the way we can start off with a few measurements. First is going to be overall. We're going to have about 20-1/2". Our ground clearance is going to be about 16-3/4". Our closest point sits about 5-1/2" away.

We do have a few different positions we can put our rack into. The first thing, we're going to lay our mast down by pulling out on this pin here at the center. We'll lay that down. We can reinsert that pin. We're going to gain full access into our back hatch area to get anything in or out that we may need.

What's great about this is that we don't have to take that whole rack off of our vehicle. We'll close that up and then put our mast back into place. For our next position we'll remove the two pins at the sides. That's going to allow us to fold up our cradle arms for a more compact storage position. We like to call it the suitcase position, just like so. Notice that I did move the hooks around just a bit. That's just so that they're out of the way of that adjustable wheel cradle knob there so that we can fold it up compact. like I mentioned before, this is great for storage. The next thing we'll check is our hitch. You'll see that this is designed to work with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches. We have our anti-rattle bolt and clip down there. That's going to keep a lot of shake and play out of the bike rack as we head down the road. That's going to be our completed look at the Swagman XT2 platform-style bike rack, part number S64650, on our 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan.
