Review of the Thule Hitch Bike Racks on a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan

Today on our 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan, we're doing a test fit of the Thule T2 Classic Platform-Style 4 Bike Rack. That part number is TH9044-TH9046. Now, we've already got our bike on our rack here. We're first going to show you one of our features and then well go over how our bike is secured down and some more features. Now, we can actually tilt our bike rack with our bike on away from our vehicle. I'm going to get an extra set of hands. Its a good idea to do so especially if you have the four bikes on here.

I'm going to have him hold the end here. I'm going to come around to the side and pull out my pin. Then I'm going to push my lever towards my bikes. With that release, we're going to set it down gently on the ground there. While its in this position, well actually gain access to our back hatch area. Now, because of how big our door is on our caravan, we actually cannot open our door all the way.

We are going to make contact with that handle there. If we have somebody holding our door, we can get things out in that position. That would be all right. You might also be able to open it if you have a different style handle bars on your bike as well. Let's put our bike rack back up into position.

We're going to lift at the back until it clicks into place, and then I'll come around and replace our pin. Now, let's take a look at how our bike is secured down. At the front here, we have a wheel cradle holding our front tire in place and then we have a wheel hook. Now, this is going to sit right in front of your brakes or in front of your frame depending on the style of bike you have. Back here in the back, we have a ratcheting strap with a bushing that's going to protect your tire. Well just push on our gray button and pull that strap through.

Then to remove our frame or our wheel hook here, we're going to grab to our bike. We got a button here on this side. We're just going to push that down and lift straight up and then tilt that wheel hook out of the way. This will give us enough room to pull of our bike and set it off to the side. Then with our bike out of the way, I always suggest that you replace everything and put it back into the original position. Well lower inaudible 00:02:52 hook here and fold it over. Now, we're ready to take a few measurements. The first, this is going to be our overall with our platform down here. To the back of the vehicle, we're adding about 15-1/2 inches. Our ground clearance back here in the back is going to be about 20-3/4 inches. Our closest point here is going to be 4-1/2 inches away there. We do have another option to put this bike up into a folded position. Now, this is going to be great for closed-quarters parking like parking garages or even a parking lot. Again, well pull our lever and we're going to lift straight up on our bike rack. Again, it might be a good idea to get an extra set of hands. It is pretty stiff here. All right. We're going to get an extra set of hands here to help us out with that. Pull up there. Well have him lift on the back so that locks into place. Now, it's secured up against the back of our vehicle and we're ready to take a second set of measurements. Our ground clearance in our folded position is going to be about 11-3/4 inches. Overall, to our vehicle its going to be about 11-1/2 inches now. It looks like our closest point, its going to be right down here on the bottom portion of our wheel cradle, and that looks like its going to be about a half-inch off. Just be aware when you're loading up your bike rack that you may come in contact there. Now, taking a look at our hitch. This is designed to work with 2-inch hitches only. It also comes with anti-rattle bolt and lock so you can take that key off, put the dust cover over, and you've secured your bike rack to your vehicle. It also comes with the tool to tighten down your bolt as well. That's going to be our completed look at the Thule T2 Classic Platform-Style 4 Bike Rack, part number TH9044-TH9046 on our 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan. Here on our test course, well start by going through the inaudible 00:05:38. This is going to show us the side-to-side action which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, well see the twisting action. This will simulate hanging a curve or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full-speed bumps, well see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway.
