Review of the Thule Hitch Bike Racks on a 2017 Subaru Forester


Today on our 2017 Subaru Forester we're doing a test fit of the Thule T2 Pro XTB platform-style 4-bike rack. That part number is TH9034XT-9036XT. Now we already have our bike secured down. We're first going to show you one of the key features of this rack. We're going to come to the back handle here and we're going to squeeze that until that clicks. We'll tilt our bike rack down until it's completely tilted away from our vehicle.

We're going to have full access into our back hatch area. You'll see we're not going to make contact with our bike at all and we're going to have clear access to get anything in or out of the back that we may need. Then to put our bike rack back into place, we'll simply lift up until that clicks back into place. Now as for how our bike is secured down, here at the back we have a ratcheting strap. I'm going to push down on the bottom portion of our button. Then to ratchet it we would just lift up on the gray portion at the bottom.

Here at the front we have a wheel hook which sits either in front of our brakes or in front of our frame depending on how our bike is made. Then we have a cable lock here at the front which is going to help to secure your bike into place and prevent theft and tampering. We push on the gray button to release that and pull straight down to tighten it into place. We'll push that out of the way. We can take our bike off and set it off to the side. Then I like to replace my hook so that it doesn't get damaged.

Then we can take a couple measurements. First is going to be overall what we're adding to our vehicle. That's going to be about 57". Our ground clearance is going to be about 20-1/2". Our closest point is about 3-1/2".

From the center of our hitch pin hole to our closest point we're going to have about 6-3/4". Now we do have one more position we can put our rack into. Again, squeezing our handle at the back, we're going to lift our bike rack straight up until that locks into place. We're not going to have to worry about our closest point in this position, but overall now we're adding about 15" to our vehicle. This is going to be great for close quarters situations like parking. Now as for our hitch, on our right hand side we have an auto-pin that releases and inserts automatically into the pin hole once you push it into place. It makes it easier to insert that pin. Down here we have our anti-rattle device. This tightens everything up on the inside shank. It does have the option to lock, so it will free spin when it's locked into place. Then you can see that's going to take a lot of shake and play out of our bike rack as we head down the road. That's going to be our completed look at the Thule T2 Pro XTB platform-style 4-bike rack, part number TH9034XT-9036XT, on our 2017 Subaru Forester.Speaker 2: This is our test course. Let's start with the slalom. This shows side to side action such as turning corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps. This shows twisting action such as hitting curbs, potholes, road debris, or uneven pavement. Last of all, the speed bumps. This shows up and down action such as driving through a parking lot or parking garage, or driving in and out of a driveway.

Having a family of four, I like the idea of a 4-bike hitch mount rack; however, I'm concerned about the weight of four bikes plus the platform rack and the amount of leverage created by the further extension of the weight to the rear of the Forester. Even with the 2" hitch is there not a danger of exceeding the tongue weight or intended capacity of the car and hitch?

Oh that definitely is a factor, which is why it is always important to know the weight of the bike rack and any bikes that you'll be transporting. The T2 Pro XTB that is in this video weighs in at 96 lbsand when fully loaded can hold up to 160 lbs worth of bikes (40 lbs per bike) which would bring us to a grand total of 256 lbs. This should be under any tongue weight rating for a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver.
