Review of the Thule Roof Box on a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Hey guys, Colin here at etrailer, and today we've got a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan, and now we've been test-fitting some roof racks on there, throwing some roof rack accessories on there. You can see right now we've got the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Box installed. Let's go over some of the features of this, show you how it interacts with your Volkswagen so you know how it's going to help you in your life. Now, this is a really nice box from Thule, you can see it has a very nice sleek look and compliments our Tiguan very well. It's got a nice aerodynamic shape to it. It's going to help cut down on wind noise and drag when you're traveling, even at high speeds. Got that nice glossy black finish on top.

Again, makes it look very nice on top of our Volkswagen. Now, one of the great features about this box and most of Thule's boxes do this, is that we have a dual sided opening lid. So even though right now we have it kind of pushed over to the passenger side of our car. Let's say we have it in the middle of our Volkswagen and we want to access it from either side, we can do so. I'll just come over to the driver's side just to show you guys it will open on both sides. It's not even that far for me to hop up here.

You might be pulled in a tight parking spot against the wall or something and you want to get something out of here but you can't access it from the passenger side, so we just hop up here. I'll just open it up real quick, and I'll show you how this locking mechanism works on the other side where you can see. Opens right up for us so we can access our cargo from either side. Now, I'll make my way back over to the passenger side so we can go over some more features of it. One thing I do want to point out, you can see we do have this sticker right here. This will come on your Motion XT box, but you do have the option to remove it.

It's very easy. Now, what's nice is that right here is our locking cylinder, and how we open up the box. That having the locks included is a very nice feature so that you can secure all your cargo up top. The box is going to be great for getting any of that extra cargo or luggage up and in the box enclosed away from the elements, like the sun and the rain, and it's just going to give you more elbow and leg room on the inside of your Volkswagen. I know from taking a lot of road trips when I was younger, we definitely struggled with elbow and leg room, because we didn't have another way to store our cargo.Just insert your key, turn to the unlock position. You're going to leave your key in there and then we just pull this latch this way.

When that red square appears, It let you know that it's unlocked and it's going to stay that way, and then we can just open up the box. I'm going to hop up here so I can show you guys a little bit more about it.Now, what's nice is that Thule has these four quick mount clamps right here. These are going to be how it secures your cargo box to your roof rack. I'll come outside of the crossover here, just to show you how it works. It's a lot easier to see it this way. Then try to see it on the box and have to go to the bottom, but as you spin that knob on top, you can see the little claws right here coming closer in. We have the Thule WingBar Evo roof rack installed, so these are some Aero crossbars, but these clamps will work for virtually any crossbar you might have, whether it's an AeroBar, EllipticalBar, Round or SquareBar, and it's going to work for most factory roof racks as well. Just tighten that down until you hear that audible click, letting you know it's torqued all the way.Let's go ahead and take it off of that crossbar. Bring it up and in here. So what we'll do is drop it through this track right here. This track lets you know that it'll work for a wide variety of crossbar spreads so we can slide it up this way or back that way to accommodate whatever spread you might have, if you can't adjust it. Drop the claws through right there. It clips into place on that track. Let me just tighten it down, like you saw me do just a minute ago. Go until we hear that audible click, and then we're good to go.Now, on the inside of the box, we do have about 18 cubic feet of storage space. That should be more than enough for a family, about five to six people who want to get some extra cargo up here. Maybe we got some beach equipment you want to throw up here, or just luggage in general. There should be plenty to be able to get that loaded and safe from the elements. You are going to get some straps included so you can tie down your cargo with these different tie down points. We have six of them integrated into the box, and this box is actually not just for cargo and luggage. If you want to go on a skiing trip, take your skis and snowboards with you, you can throw those up here as well. You'd be able to get up to five snowboards loaded or seven pairs of skis, so that's going to really increase how much you can do with this box. Again, those straps, you can get all that, your skis and snowboards secured with those straps. Now, for some reason. When you get down, we do have this nice pull strap that's up top. What we can do is grab it right here and then pull it down to close it, tuck that strap inside and pull it down. So what's actually nice is that it's kind of got its own safety mechanism, meaning that we can't lock it fully until it's properly closed. You'll see this red band disappears when I close it, and all three latches engage. Just like that, that lets you know that it's ready to be locked up, just like that. Now, one thing you do want to keep in mind is that this cargo box is going to add some height, so if we measure from the top of our crossbar to the top of the box, so meaning right here to the top, it is about 16 inches. You definitely don't want to forget about that. Especially if you're at your house. We've had a lot of customers send in pictures because they forgot that their cargo box was on top and it was completely damaged. You definitely don't want to forget about that for any low clearance situations. The last thing I do want to point out is that with the cargo box installed, we can come back here and just want to show you guys that we can open up the trunk of our Tiguan. Now, you can see it comes all the way up. Plenty of space right there between the spoiler and the box. And even if you do get this installed and you are having troubles, like I showed you, those tracks that we're the clamps go down and through, you can scoot those up and then move the entire box up to be able to gain access so you're not losing any ability to access the cargo you might have stored in the trunk.Well, everyone, that's pretty much all you need to know about the Thule Motion XT Rooftop Cargo Box on your 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan.
