Review of the WeatherTech BumpStep Hitch Mounted Bumper Step

Today we're going to be taking a look at the WeatherTech bump step, part number WT81BS1. This hitch step installs into a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver as you can see here. With it installed, this is going to allow us to gain easy access into the bed of our truck. We have it installed on our SUV, you see that we can have it installed and gain access up to the roof of our vehicle, access anything on our roof rack that we may need to or any accessories that we may have installed. You can also see that with it installed in the hitch, it would also work on a front-mounted hitch. You could use this to help assist in working underneath the hood of your vehicle. Also, with it installed, it's going to act as a strong bumper guard.

If we we're to start reversing and made contact with something, the hitch step is going to make contact with that surface before our vehicle does. This is made from a strong durable construction. It's going to have that hard, plastic feel to it. It's made from a composite material. You can also see that it has a really nice textured surface on top here. That's going to ensure that your foot stays planted on top of the hitch step and doesn't slide around so they really take into consideration the amount of safety that they put into this thing.

You can also see that it's black in color so it's going to have that matte black finish that's going to deliver a nice rugged look. The hitch step is going to offer a weight capacity of 300 pounds. You can see here on our particular application, we do have a bumper step but sometimes that can still allow us some difficulty in getting access whether stepping into our tailgate or reaching over and getting things out that we need to. The WheatherTech bump step is going to do a good job at allowing us to have a little bit more access as needed. I do recommend if you're going to do two feet, put one foot on each side. It's going to help level you out a little bit.

I'm about 250 pounds, and again this has a capacity of 300 pounds, and as I'm standing here jumping on it, it's not going to go anywhere so the 300 pound capacity makes sure it's nice and stable for you. With our hitch step installed on our SUV, you can see that it can allow us to gain some easier access into the rear hatch of our vehicle. This is also going to be good if you have small children that need to climb in and out of the rear hatch. It can also be used for pets too. On the solid piece hitch step, we're going to take a look at the underside real quick. I just want to point out the structural support. A nice heavy-duty construction.

You can see that the cross-structures that it has, again this is just going to add to the stability and the capacity of the hitch step. Now that we've going over some of the key features of the WhetherTech hitch step, we're going to go ahead and show you how it installs in our two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver. See here that we have multiple pinhole locations. This just offers a lot of variety, that way you can decide how far out you want it sticking from the rear of your vehicle. Some hitches sit pretty far underneath the bumper or they sit back a little bit so you'd want to use one of the first pinhole locations. Our hitch sits about a half inch behind our bumper so we can scoot this in a little bit more and still have full access to the step. These holes are going to have a diameter of 5/8ths of an inch. We're going to simply find the one that we want, line it up with the pinhole in our hitch and then we'll need to install a hitch-pin and clip or you can use a hitch-pin and lock. These are going to be sold separately. For our application today, I'm using just a standard 5/8th inch pin that comes with a clip. You can find that on our website with part number PC3. Now we're going to take a look at the measurements of the hitch step. It's going to give us a depth measuring from this point here to this point here of 3 and 3/4 of an inch. It's going to give us an overall length from side to side of 11 and 3/4 of an inch. It's going to give us a thickness measuring form the bottom of the platform of about 2 1/2 inches. That's going to complete today's review of the WhetherTech hitch step, part number WT81BS1. .
