How to Install the Yakima Roof Rack on a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're going to be test fitting the Yakima JetStream Roof Rack System, consisting of part numbers Y00425, these are the JetStream crossbars 50" long, part number Y00148, these are the SkyLine towers for the Yakima crossbars specifically for fixed mounting points and finally, part number Y00244 and this is the landing pad for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Yakima JetStream Roof Rack System is great for carrying a wide variety of accessories on your roof while freeing up space inside your vehicle. This can carry anything from bike racks to cargo baskets to cargo boxes. The bars do have an aerodynamic shape to them and that coupled with the rubber strip up at the top will cut down the wind noise and drag while you drive. Also, when we remove the end cap, you can see that it can be used with T-Track accessories. What makes this different from the other roof rack models out there is you would have to remove the rubber strip up at the top to utilize the T-Track accessories. With this, you simply push the center strip down and then slide them in place.

This roof rack system is insanely easy to install. It simply mounts in to an existing point onto your flush mounted side rails. And to remove the bars, simply open up the end cap, like you see there, lift it up and then it comes with these caps for the landing pads so you can leave them installed and they're not going to have any weather damage to them. I would also like to point out that at the end here we have these plastic notches that can be taken out and replaced with the Yakima SKS Lock System, which is sold separately. Not only can you secure your roof rack to your vehicle but you can also make it key alike with any accessories you may be carrying on your roof rack as well.Next I'd like to give a couple quick measurements from the center of the roof to the bottom of the bar is going to be about 4-1/4".

From the center to the top is going to be about 5-1/4". So there's going to be plenty of space in between the bar and the roof for any accessory you may want to use without making any contact with the roof itself. Also, both bars have a combined carrying capacity of 165 pounds but you always want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can withstand those weights. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the roof rack system, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. We already have our front bar installed on our vehicle.

Our next step is we have our rear bar partially assembled and we'll take our SkyLine tower, attach our fit kit and put it onto the other end of our bar. And then we'll install our landing pad onto our flush mounted side rails.Let's take our plastic bracket here from our JetStream kit and put it on the top portion of our tower. We push it in until you hear it click and then we'll take our metal piece, put it in the center with the screw. And then we'll flip it upside down and tighten it down. Now the neat thing about this tool is once it's tightened down to its specifications it will have two or three audible clicks and you know you're not going to be over-tightening it, like so.

Now we can place it onto our bar. We'll take this end, slide it into the slot on the bottom, like so. Just push it into place then we'll take our end cap, put that into place as well and now we can move onto our landing pad.Our first step with the flush mounted side rails is to remove the screw at the end here with the included tool that comes with the landing pad kit. Put that in place, just loosen it up and you want to remove the screw all the way and set it into a place where you'll remember it because once you remove the roof rack system, you'll want to have this put back in place. Next we'll take the first part of our landing pad, this flat piece, and we'll set it directly over where we just removed the screw. Then we'll our top portion, set that on top and then we'll take the screw, the lock washer and the flat washer, place that in the center, line it up with the hole then take our included Allen tool and tighten it down until it's nice and snug. After that, we can grab out bar, set it in place and start installing it as well.Take our bar, making sure that our end caps are in the open position, set them onto our roof and into the cradle. Set that down and next we'll make sure our crossbar overhang is even on both sides. So now we can tighten down our center screw here, which will connect the tower to the bar and tighten it down. And again, you'll want to do this when you hear those two or three audible clicks, like so. And then we can close this up. And once you close this end cap, it's going to lock itself into the landing pads that we just installed too. Now we're ready to load up our gear and hit the road. And there you have it for the Yakima JetStream Roof Rack System on our 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
