Review of the Yakima Trunk Bike Racks on a 2019 Toyota RAV4

John: Hey guys, John here from etrailer.com today we have our 2019 Toyota RAV4 and we are test fitting the Yakima fullback trunk mount bike rack. This is a two-bike version, but we also have a three-bike version here at etrailer.com. The only difference is that the two-bike version can hold up to two bikes weighing 35 pounds each, but the three-bike version can hold three bikes but the total weight capacity is 90 Pounds. This is a great way to get our bikes to our favorite destination without installing something on our roof and having to load them up there, or maybe having a hitch installed and installing a bike rack. This is a great opportunity for people. A lot of people like to use this. You may be renting the vehicle, so this way you don't have to have anything permanently installed.Like to point a few things out before we start getting into some specs on this and how it fits directly with the vehicle.

As you can see our bike here, it sits at a little bit of an angle, how it's installed. We have two exhausts on this vehicle. And so if you have a wheel that maybe has a little bit more sensitive to heat, you do want to be mindful of that. There is an adapter bar that we do sell here at etrailer.com that you can fit. It'll sit on the seat post and up here by the handlebars, that'll help level your bike out a little more.

Especially as you can see this one isn't as bad, but maybe you have a step-through frame or a kid's bike, this is what you're going to want to use to help keep it a little more level. For this install, we did have to put the straps in what they call the anchor mode. Normally you'll take this hook and you'll either put it on top of the hatch or under the door. But in anchor mode, it's very simple. You just have this hole here in the hook. You take the strap and feed it through and then this will just drop down inside from up top, or we'll put it down under inaudible 00:02:12.

That way the hook is not. There basically is not enough space for this hook to fit properly on the hatch. And so this way, this is just pulling up against the hatch. Our bike here has three points of contact. These are called zip strips. We have three of them, two on the top, and then one here.

This is the anti-sway cradle. This helps limit the movement of the bike. So they're not making contact with the vehicle or with each other. The front wheel can swing back and forth, so I do recommend picking up. We have a hook and loop strap here at etrailer.com that basically just keeps the wheel in line with the bike frame, again to help keep them from contacting each other. To remove our bike, we will press on these levers here and pull the zip strips up. When you remove them, you can put them on the arms or set them aside, but make sure you re-install them because that's a very common thing, is to just put them aside and forget about them. So you don't want to do that. And you rotate the anti-sway cradle up and out of the way, it's easier to get our bike off.Our cradles here have a little bit of a. It's almost like a ridge and that helps protect our cables. It keeps the bike frame up a little bit. So they're not crushing the cables and putting all that weight directly on them. Zip strips, just press in place. A very simple application. So I'd like to point out here, the bike does have a cable lock. It seems like it's a little short, but that's just because you only have to lock the one at the front here, because if you can't remove the one at the front, you can't remove this one. And like all Yakima products, it does have the integrated bottle opener on this arm.Let's get you some specs to see how this will fit with this vehicle, so you can see if it's good for your lifestyle. From our rear bumper out to the furthest edge is about 30 and a half inches. That's a good number to keep in mind. If maybe you need to park this in the garage with the bikes loaded, you can keep the arms up, you know you're adding about 30 and a half inches to the total length of your vehicle. We can also rotate the arms down to reduce the length of the bike rack. Yakima made it very simple. We just rotate these gray pieces up and here we'll take one arm down, make sure it pops back into the lock position. And you do that again with this one. With the arms down that reduces our total length to about 10 inches. It cuts it down about a third. You should have no problems fitting in your garage with this added, since it only adds 10 inches. One last thing I'd like to point out, and this is the case for any trunk mount bike rack, the arms do rest here, so you will not be able to utilize your rear wiper. It's very important you don't want to damage the bike rack or your vehicle by doing that.Well that is going to complete our look at the Yakima fullback trunk mount bike rack on a 2019 RAV4. Thanks for watching. First We'll take it onto our slalom course. This will show you the side to side action, such as making turns or evasive maneuvers. Now we're at the alternating speed bumps. This will show you how it looks driving on uneven pavement or potholes. Finally, we're at the solid speed bumps, which simulates going into your driveway or parking lots.
