It sounds like you are using a 4-Way to 7-Way adapter like the Tow Ready # 30717 to connect to the 7-Way on your trailer. If the trailer doesn't have electric brakes and you don't need the 12V power circuit then it's a simple plug-and-play install except for the white ground wire.
The white ground wire does still need to be securely attached to a clean, bare metal surface that's free of any paint, debris, or corrosion. If you don't have this wire attached that is why your lights aren't working when hooking up to the trailer.
If you do have the white wire grounded I just recommend making sure the adapter is properly connected to the 4-Way on the tow vehicle. Also of course make sure the 4-Way itself on the truck is working by testing it with a circuit tester like # PTW2979 or connect to a trailer with a 4-Way to see if the lights work.
If you are still having trouble locating or fixing the issue please let me know and we can continue to troubleshoot.
