Melt ice and snow away on driveways, plazas, and small parking lots with this SaltDogg hitch-mounted, electric salt spreader. Landscapers and property owners will love this spreader that has a 4.4-cu ft capacity and casts rock salt 3' to 30'. If you run a big operation, you can use this spreader for light residential jobs, freeing up your larger trucks for more substantial work. You won't need to refuel or service a gas engine because the operation is electric. The quiet motor also won't wake up residents while you're de-icing late at night or early in the morning. Its powerful auger provides a smooth, consistent flow for #1 free-flowing rock salt.

How to Use the SaltDogg

Tailgate salt spreader installs on 2 inch receiver

First, assemble the salt spreader and slide it into your 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver.

Tailgate spreader with salt

Then pour #1 free-flowing rock salt into the hopper. This type of sodium chloride should be used because the granules are smaller and more consistently sized than other types of road salt. As a result, it is less likely to block the chute, which helps to ensure a smooth flow. To protect the contents inside the hopper, put on the lid and secure it in place using the cover latches.

Tailgate hopper

The slanted walls in the hopper help to channel the material down into the chute. A rotating vertical steel auger then breaks apart any large clumps and pushes the material down the length of the chute.

Tailgate salt spreader spinner

Once the granulated agent passes through the chute, it's sent onto the rotating spinner where it gets dispersed. You can easily adjust the direction of the spread pattern to go to either side or directly behind your vehicle by positioning the deflector shield. Just loosen the hardware on the hitch mount, slide the shield to the desired position, and retighten the hardware to hold the shield in place. This gives you the flexibility to cast your material where you want it, so you can get the job done as efficiently as possible.

Tailgate salt spreader controller

You can control these functions from the comfort of your cab with the variable-speed controller. Turn the spreader on with the power switch, and then use the dial to adjust the speed of the auger and the spinner. These 2 parts operate off the same motor and function together. A number next to the dial will indicate the speed setting that you're on. Turn the dial up higher if a stronger rotation from the auger is needed to break apart large chunks of material or if a faster rotation from the spinner is needed to cast your material a greater distance. If you need an extra burst of salt for an exceptionally icy area, push the blast button and the speed setting will automatically jump to 9, the maximum speed. After a moment of heavy salting, the speed controller will return to your previous number value.

There's also a vibrator switch that lets you control the optional vibrator kit (not included), which could be particularly helpful if there's moisture in the hopper that causes the de-icing agent to stick together.

High-Performance Electric Operation

Tailgate spreader gear motor

This salt spreader uses a 12-volt, 1/2-horsepower motor to power the auger and spinner. This independent, electric motor runs quieter than a gas motor, and it also requires less maintenance. Because it's not uncommon for salt to stick together, the steel auger maximizes the spreader's performance by breaking apart clumps, which prevents clogs in the chute and heavy chunks from falling onto the spinner. The 9" spinner can spread rock salt in a 3' to 30' radius. To withstand the corrosive effects of the salt, the spinner is made from a durable polyurethane.

Circuit breaker for SaltDogg

To prevent damage to the spreader and controller, a 50-amp circuit breaker is included. This breaker will shut down power to the SaltDogg if an overload of current passes through the machine. It also has a push-to-trip button to manually trip the circuit breaker.

Tilt-Away Feature for Rear Hatch Access

Tilt-away function for SaltDogg

If you need to access the back of your Jeep, SUV, or truck bed, just remove the pin that holds the frame of the spreader upright. Then slowly lower the hopper to the ground, tilting it away from your vehicle. Rest the hopper on the ground and you'll be able to open your rear hatch or tailgate.

Heavy-Duty Poly Hopper

The patented double-wall hopper on this spreader has a 4.4-cu ft capacity. It's also constructed of durable polyethylene and has a powder coated carbon steel frame, both of which make it resistant to corrosion and impacts.

Simple Installation

This SaltDogg spreader will work with most Jeeps, SUVs, 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton trucks with a 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver.

Tailgate spreader install

The 3 mounting holes on the 2" shank let you adjust the distance between your bumper and the spreader for clearance. The farthest hole is for vehicles with a large bumper or a spare tire on the back.

On the motor-and-frame assembly, there are 5 mounting holes for adjusting the height of the spinner from the ground. To cast the ideal concentration of salt onto the road, you'll want to mount the spinner about 18" off the ground. Once you have determined which mounting holes you're using, install the motor-and-frame assembly on the receiver mount. Then install the spinner shield and mount the hopper to the assembly.

Tailgate spreader install

Mount the controller in your cab and plug it into the included power cable. Attach the power cable directly to your car battery for power - this setup completely bypasses your vehicle's wiring. Then plug the main wiring harness into the controller and route it back to the spreader where you will plug it into the 12V motor.

Simple Maintenance

You'll want to keep the salt spreader lubricated throughout the long winter season. To do this, spray lubricant around the motor shaft. This will help prevent water from penetrating the motor. Apply dielectric grease to all electrical connections between uses and before long-term storage as well.

When the SaltDogg is not in use, be sure to empty any unused material because salt can freeze or solidify and cause the spreader to jam. At the end of a job, wash out the entire spreader and rinse off the external surfaces to help protect it from any type of corrosion.

Video Transcript for Buyers SaltDogg Salt Spreader for Trucks Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at Buyer's hitch mounted salt spreaders. You can get this in the Standard version, part number 337TGSUV1B, or the Pro version, with part number 337TGSUVPROA.These hitch mounted spreaders are going to be great for SUVs, half, three quarter, and one ton trucks. The pro version has a spread range from 3 feet to 30 feet, while the standard version has a spread range of 12 feet to 24 feet. The 9 inch poly-spinner distributes the salt depending upon the speed that you've got set.The pro version has a half horse power motor and it's directly controlled by your controller. And the standard version has one eighth's horsepower motor, which is powered by the auxiliary plug and it only has one speed. Both have a 4.4 cubic foot poly-bucket that is going to be corrosion resistant. Additionally, this hopper is light weight making it easier to remove and install into your hitch.

The brackets supporting the hopper and the motor has an orange powder coat finish to prevent against rust and corrosion.Another nice feature, you still need to access the back of your SUV or truck bed, you can lower down your tailgate, or open that lift gate, with the tilt away function, simply pull the pin, and release the pin from the unit itself, and with the pin removed, it'll lower down, tilting away, allowing you to lower it on your truck bed.Located here on the upright beam, we have five adjustable holes. Even though there are six holes, the top one can only be used for the tilt function. So you have five different positions you can place it in, height-wise. Coming out of the hitch, there are three holes to set the distance from your bumper. The manufacturer recommends the standard version for class three and four hitches, and class four for the pro version. You want to make sure that you don't exceed the tongue weight that your hitch has available. Here, we have our controlling unit.

The power button on the unit is hooked directly to the battery, so it'll turn on regardless of your key position. You'll know it's on when the light illuminates and the number value, produced speed, appears. This speed knob can go off, which is zero, all the way up to a max speed of nine. The blast button will automatically set the speed setting to nine, as long as your speed setting is turned to one or higher. We the option of vibrator installed.

You can depress the button, it will illuminate, and vibrate will be on, as long as the light's lit.Compared to push options, like this one from Buyer's, which is great for small driveways and patios, the hitch mounted spreader's going to be able to cover a much larger area, much faster, and from the convenience and warmth of your vehicle. Now, we'll show you how to get it installed. If you have the standard version, you simply put in your hitch and run the wire up and plug it into your auxiliary outlet. If you've got the pro model, you'll have a controller you'll need to install. We're going to go into a little bit more detail. You'll begin by finding a suitable mounting location for the circuit breaker that comes included in your kit. You'll need to make sure you have circuit breaker mounted close enough so the large red battery cable can attach to the battery positive post.

Now, you'll take the harness that has two ring terminals on it, with a red and black wire. The red wire will attach to the other end of your circuit breaker. This is the one on the breaker labeled, auxiliary. The back wire will connect to the negative post on your battery. You'll then route the rest of that harness inside your vehicle. You can route this through the firewall to get it inside. Once you get to your control box, simply plug it in to the red and black wire coming off your control box.You can mount your control box wherever you like. We've got ours mounted on top of the dash here. We've used screws with the included bracket. If you wanted to hide it, you could mount it underneath the dash and tuck your wires up underneath. It's going to vary on the installation procedure, depending your vehicle and how you route those wires. We'll then take the other harness that comes in the kit. It has the four pin connector. That's going to plug into the four pin connector on your control box. And this one is going to route to the back of the vehicle to plug into our salt spreader.Once routed to the back, we're going to plug our harness into our auger motor. We're going to plug the red wire into the white wire on our auger motor, and the black wire to the black wire. If you have the optional vibrator installed, you can plug this into that to be able to activate your vibrator. We'll now turn our unit on and make sure it's working properly. You want to verify, while looking down inside the salt spreader, that it's spinning counter clockwise. When you're ready to fill your unit, simply pull down on the handle on each side to release it, and we'll just lift the lid off, and set it aside. It's easiest to fill the unit while standing in the back of your truck bed, while you're inside and warm. The unit will hold 4.4 cubic feet, which is about 300 pounds of salt. And, with it all filled up, we can reinstall our lid. That just sits into place, pull the levers down on each side, and we're ready to melt some ice.And that completes our look Buyer's hitch mounted salt spreaders.
