Video Transcript for Bestop TrekStep Truck Bumper Step Installation - 2023 Ford F-150

How's it going, neighbors This is Ed here with etrailer.com, and we're taking a look at the Bestop TrekStep on our 2023 Ford F-150. The TrekStep is a great solution for someone that's looking for a way to get access to their bed easier without a step stool or stepping on your bumper. It is deployable just with your foot so you can kick it in and pull it out without blocking any access to the back of your hitch and giving you a little bit easier access to your bed. The TrekStep is spring loaded, made from extruded aluminum. What that does for you, extruded aluminum, it's gonna be more solid and rigid for holding up weight, so that's actually really good for that. Weight capacity goes up to 300 pounds, and the surface is textured, so I would feel comfortable if this we inchesre my truck to add having this as another add-on.

So, we're gonna put our tape measure to the back of the vehicle to see what type of dimensions we're adding to the rear, how much height it takes to get up to it, and how close, how much we're adding overall as far as our clearance. So, you're about 13 inches from the ground. That's about where you would need to step up to get to the platform. As far as the surface area, you're a little bit under six and a half inches. Plenty of place to get your foot on to get a nice, sturdy step.

As far as ground clearance, the lowest point here is right at 10 inches, but I can't foresee you intentionally rolling off with it still deployed. And folded up, it's 13 inches. Well, you know, past the clearance of anything underneath your truck. As far as the top part, it doesn't make any contact by design, so essentially, it's gonna work out pretty well as far as not making contact. If you wanted your step to sit lower, you can absolutely use the included spacers in the kit to get you a little bit more drop.

The step itself can be adjusted however you would like it. I have it installed where it's centered, but you can actually take it out off to the side of the vehicle, as well, to get that step from the side, or you can bring it in closer to the middle of the vehicle if that would work better if you're trying to reach and lift over the tailgate. The TrekStep is installed using these two bolts here that are in place of the bumper bracket. When you swap that out, you're just gonna use these fasteners to attach it to the vehicle, and as you see, it fits right into the open space underneath the bed. You have plenty of room for the TrekStep to deploy and retract.

Our F-150 is not equipped with the factory hitch. If your model is equipped with the factory hitch, the hardware for your installation is included, and it's just an additional step. As far as with our setup, it just required us to remove two larger nuts and install two larger bolts in its place, really cut and dry and easy, and I'll show you how to get that installed. After identifying where our bolts are on our bumper and removing the bracket, we're gonna assemble our step. Since we're gonna have our orientation on the driver's side, our mounting bolts are gonna go towards the vehicle and we're gonna align the holes on our step with our bracket. Come on. Just prop it up this way and we're gonna thread it through to stabilize. (screws clank) And now, we're gonna fasten our bolts into our assembly. All right, and we're gonna fasten these larger two bolts using the 16 millimeter socket and we're gonna use our 3/16 inch Allen key for our thinner retaining bolt here. With it being a fresh part, you may notice that with your 3/16 Allen bolt, you're gonna have a little bit of difficulty getting it threaded all the way through the assembly down here where it ends. It wouldn't be a bad idea if you wanted to use a driver of some sort to try to get a little bit more torque behind it. Alternatively, if you only have the Allen key at your disposal, just kind of working the threads down, possibly using the lubricant, would help get this all the way threaded through. We're gonna identify the two nuts that are securing our bumper support bracket, and these guys came up to 11, I'm sorry, 15/16. So, we're gonna grab a ratchet and try to get this guy loosened up. There we go. Then a little backwards motion. There we are. (wrench clicks) (nuts clank) All right, now that we have our nuts removed, we're gonna slide these retainer clips off of the bolts holding our bracket into place. This is gonna take a flat head and kind of walk it along the threads themselves. (bolts clank) Now that we have our bumper bracket removed, we're gonna take our hardware from our step and feed it in place of the bumper bracket. So, you just kind of stick your hand through here and make sure the threaded side of your bolt feeds all the way through. And also, we're gonna make sure we put a flat washer on first before we feed it through. (parts clank) Now, we're gonna mount up our assembly. I'm just gonna guide my bolts across the upper and lower hole. (parts clank and rattle) All right, I'm just gonna use a bolt to just hold it in place. So, we're gonna go flat washer and then nyloc nut to hold it in place. I'm gonna do the same on the top. Now that I have my hardware hand tightened, I'm gonna use a 22 millimeter wrench to hold the bolt head and a 22 millimeter ratchet socket to fasten it down. (wrench whirs) So, now that we have both of our nuts fastened down, we have everything assembled and attached to the truck. One step I skipped is using the red Loctite on our threads. If it was a permanent installation, you definitely wanna use that, and it is included in the kit. Because this is a demonstration, I'm gonna take it off after the fact, I definitely wouldn't want to use red Loctite. So now, we're gonna extend our step bracket and position our step to however we would like it. On the bottom here, this bracket slides and you're gonna align the two holes with the holes on the bottom of your bracket. And I'm just gonna hand tighten my Allen screws in just enough to get it started. And we're gonna take our Allen key and fasten our bolts down, securing our step. One other side note, you can adjust the position of the step if you want it offset, centered or offset inward. This is where you would make that adjustment, and you can always go back and change it later. So, I'm just gonna center it for the sake of this installation. Overall, installation is pretty easy once you get a feel for what model and which instructions you're gonna follow for your particular F-150. If you have a hitch, you would use this additional bolt to attach the assembly to your hitch. Also, if your clearance was coming too close to your vehicle or you wanted it lower, you have, the kit has two included spacers, and also the Loctite I referred to for a permanent installation. So, this has been a look at the Bestop TrekStep on our 2023 Ford F-150. You have a great day.

Use your foot to lower this spring-loaded step from beneath your vehicle's rear bumper to easily access gear in the bed. The step bolts on without drilling, retracts under your truck for storage and works with your tailgate open or closed.

Awesome addition and very much appreciated! The step gets comments every time someone sees me use it, and I do my best to send them your way to add it to their own vehicles!

Instructions could use some editing. Took a bit longer than the 45 minutes stated in the instructions.
Sits down a little lower than the one on the 2014 but that is due to a design change by Ford in the bumper support

Good product

Purchased the Trek Step for my 2018 Ram 2500 Mega Cab. It took my about fifteen minutes to install the step following the instruction provided. All mounting parts were included and only needed a few common tools. The step extends and retracts easily and feels secure while stepping up and descending the truck bed. The step is made of aluminum and feels to be made strong. Recommended if you need a little help stepping into your high truck bed.

Great product and fast shipping. The TrekStep parts were easy to put together. My only comment is the problem I had trying to bolt it onto the bumper frame. One of the bolt holes in the bumper frame was to small for the bolts that with the TrekStep so I had to drill it out.Trying to get it installed onto the frame was not going good so I took it to my mechanic who was kind enough to put my truck on the hoist and install it for me.

by:

Seems to be a solid step. Easy to put on, especially with Trailer install video!!!

by:

The 2” spacer was missing from the original package. I called customer service and advised them of it. I was ensured that the spacer would be shipped immediately. When I received the new package it only had the bolts for the space, but no spacer. I called again and of course was told it would be mailed. I’m currently waiting for the third package to arrive.

This is a quality product. It is solidly manufactured and functions exactly as it should. Install was fairly easy except for one minor flaw which is the reason I only gave four stars. I can now get into the bed of my truck with the flick of a foot instead of jumping on the tailgate and rolling in. The kit comes with spacers to allow you to adjust how far you want the step from the bumper. The problem is if you don’t want to use the spacers the cap screw threads are too short and the screw will not seat. This is a problem that hasn’t been addressed as I read other reviews that mentioned it and my truck is a 2018. I solved the issue by using one of the spacers and adding an extra washer which allowed the screw to be tightened.

by:

I’ve had this step for over a year and it has worked great. It still works as it did the first day I put it on. It looks like new too. It was easy to install. If you don't have a step assist to get into the bed of your truck this will do the trick. Well worth the money.

by:

Great product! I call it my "old man step". When the tailgate is down on my Tundra, it was difficult to climb in and out of the bed. This step did the trick. It took me about an hour to install. It looks good and folds away neatly.

by:

Great product quality worth the price. But installation is somewhat difficult for 1 person to do while laying out in the driveway. Not everyone has access to a lift. Took some doing but it's finally installed & in use.

by:

The TrekStep is well made and works great. It was purchased to make getting in/out of the bed with the tailgate down easier and safer. I only gave it 4 stars because of some unnecessary difficulty installing the it.

The provided M6-1.0 x 75 mm Socket Cap Screw is only partially threaded. As a result, unless one or both of the 1/4" Spacers are used, the Cap Screw will not seat against the Mounting Bracket as indicated in step 3 of the installation instructions (see attached photo).

I wanted the step to be as close as possible to the bumper in the retracted position so I had to install the Spacers on top of the Mounting Bracket instead of between the Mounting Bracket and Linkage Assembly as indicated in step 7 of the installation instructions.

If the Cap Screw had been threaded like the Hex Head Bolts, I would not have had to use the Spacers like I did to make it fit.

by:

Installed on a 2014 GMC 1500 Sierra w/o the step bumper. Installation was longer than the instructions indicted, but that was due to the manufacturer's bolts. The bolts for installing on the frame should be 1/4' long due to the design of the step. It was tough getting the nuts threaded. Would be better if the bolts were the same as OEM bumper fasteners. Other than that installation was easy.

Reviews only lets you upload one photo???

Step works as advertised and I am pleased with it so far, but I will have to wait and see our it weathers a Canadian winter in Manitoba. (Road salt, slush, snow, sand, etc....)

by:

After one year the step works great, and looks great. No issues. Makes getting into the back of the bed easy.

by:

The step works as advertised. The mounting bolts are a easy to remove but you have to reinstall them on a blind.

by:

Purchased as "used" or "damaged" from etrailer for a significantly discounted price. Arrived in good condition, other than some wear and tear on the box, everything else looked like new and was complete. Installation was relatively simple, 30 - 45 minutes including several adjustment increments. Overall I am well pleased with this step, it certainly makes getting into the bed of my RAM 2500 much easier! I have made quite a few purchases from etrailer over the last several years and find their product choices, website, technical information, shipping, and customer service to be truly superior.

by:

Bought this as a step for my 2018 Ram 2500. The bed of this truck is higher off the ground than I remember my F250 being. You can climb into it (not a pretty sight), but this step makes it way easier for me (and everyone else) to get in with ease. I'm one year in and it seems to be working as well as it did the first day. No rust or change in the spring action of the step.

by:

The Bestop Trekstep was easy install. I'm 65 and did it in half an hour. The step easily flips down and back up with my foot and cuts the stretch up to the tailgate in half. Very solid feel to it. No flex I can detect at all. Very substantial fastening system to the truck.

by:

Great customer service. The first one did not work for my RAM 1500. After a simple email and phone call. I had a return label for the one and the replacement being shipped. I love my bumper step.

by:

2 bolts out and put them back in and adjust the position of the step and it is installed. It works great. To me, worth everthing I paid for it. Great service from eTrailer and quick delivery. I highly recommend the item and the seller.

by:

Often when purchasing items that have vehicle-specific requirements for installation I am a bit skeptical everything will fit and be as easy as the reviews. This step was much easier than expected to install and works like a charm. Thanks for the speedy delivery.

by:

The online order process was effortless and product arrive in a timely manner with free freight. Installation and instruction were to the point easy to follow and simple install.

by:

Easy to install and works good. Should be a big help and I won't need to take a step stool.

by:

Still working well on my 2020 2500 Ram, going to order one for my 2023 3500 i bought!
