Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your truck level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your truck sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your truck and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your truck by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your truck's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

RED Label spring construction

Unlike standard Ride-Rite air springs, the RED Label air springs operate up to 150 psi to maximize its weight capacity. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each RED Label kit includes vehicle-specific brackets, fasteners, and hardware for fast, no-drill installation. The hardware installs directly on your axle and frame and the air springs install onto the mounting points provided by the brackets. Additional equipment like control panels, compressors, and air tanks are sold separately.

Installed on a 2023 GMC 3500 Denali CCLB. Not much experience but I an a little handy. Pre-installation - watched the etrailer video. While installing I watched the video again step by step. Make sure you watch the video into the next step of install before proceeding w/the previous step. It will make your install more clean. Product works great.., phone app & remote paired & connected perfectly. Thanks for the install video & very satisfied with the product. All wiring, tubing & misc. parts were included.

After a year of use airbags still working nicely. Love the adjustability of air pressure with the remote. Only 1 issue with where the air hose goes into the top of the bag with the inlet connector. The connector with threads was backing out. Got the “ air leak “ notification &amp tracked the leak down with some Windex. Has happened twice but blue locktite on the threads &amp carefully tightening it down a bit more should end that from happening again. Very satisfied with this productpurchase

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

The left side mount does not accurately line up on my 2021 Chevy HD 3500, the airbag is therefore tilted, it does not sit straight up and down. I called the very friendly and helpful folks at etrailer, but there seems to be nothing to be done about it. I needed the kit so I kept it. In the back of my mind I always wonder if it affects the spring action of the bag, in relation to the other side, which is perfect. I use the truck with the bags inflated very infrequently.

This truly changed how I haul highly recommend it! 2022 GMC 2500HD AT4 Diesel. Install was exactly like the videos and instructions were fantastic. It took 5 hours to install these bags and Airlift wireless one compressor. I do not have a vehicle lift or large jack stands so I removed the spare tire and heat shield giving me plenty of space, just laying on the concrete. There were two modifications I had to make. 1) There is a no-fit issue on the hook spring mounts where it impacts a bracket on the axle. On the drivers side I was able to remove 1/4" of the bracket from the axle. On the drivers side I was had to shave off 1/8" off the hook spring mount to allow it to fit. Otherwise the installation was quite simple! Tanks to FabRats who had a video on this install that got me interested in making this modification and after my first 15K RV haul it fabulous. My only regret is that I did not do this earlier in my life!

GMC Sierra

I've had the Firestone Ride-Rite red air springs on the rear axle of my 2023 GMC Sierra diesel dually now for a year. I believe the best compliment I can give is that I don't really think of them, when I need them they work, beautifully.

I had an on-board compressor installed as well and the combination has been fantastic. I tow a 5th wheel toy hauler and it really is nice to just air them up and enjoy a smooth ride. I did get an added benefit that I didn’t expect, my unloaded ride, with 5 or 6 lbs of air in the springs, gives me a much better ride than just the factory set up. I didn’t think that anything could smooth out the ride on a 1 ton but they did. I’ve had absolutely no leaking of air after a year, unloaded or towing around 20k lbs.

For me and my truck these have been bullet proof. Also, a big shout out to the team at e-trailer! I would definitely purchase these Ride-Rite’s again if I ever needed to and would only order them from e-trailer!

Chevrolet Silverado

I’m extremely satisfied with these Firestone Ride-Rite Red Label Extreme Duty Air Helper Springs for my 2023 Chevy Silverado High Country. They definitely level the truck when towing my 5th wheel camper. installation was a little tight, but easier than I initially thought.
For anyone taking on installing these for yourself, I suggest doing it on a hard flat surface, use a creeper (you’ll be side to side, under and out from under the truck a good number of times), ratchet box end wrenches, crescent wrench, a headband light, and a little patience. Some of the nuts you couldn’t get a socket on them.
I couldn’t find a good location to utilize the included air fill bracket so I improvised and installed the air fill valves in the rear bed access steps as indicated in the pictures. I ran the tubing from this point, between the chassis and under bed channels and terminated straight down to the air bags. About a two hour install. I did watch a video of an actual install through etrailer before starting my installation. One minor adjustment was needed on the bottom bracket clamp due to shock bracket interference.
Thanks etrailer for providing quality items and great supporting videos.

by:

Quality components. Everything fit perfectly. I also installed air scales. Pickup rides great with a constant ride height. I’m very pleased with the system!

Doug

The air ride works great. Constant height at any load weight. Very comfortable ride. I also installed air scales. Very pleased.

by:

What’s to say, other than a great product, does everything I want them to do. Would buy them again especially from etrailer. Everything was so easy and the shipping was within a week. Keep doing what your doing etrailer Thanks Doug

by:

The installations was a SNAP! Straightforward and simple. The written instructions were better than the videos by far. The video guys tried to over complicate things. I have never pulled a trailer on air before.. I assure you I will never pull another without airride! Kudo's to firestone for a quality product that smoothed out my ride, leveled my truck and made the "feel" much safer!! (Allow 1.5-2hrs for install with basic tools)

by:

Installation guide and videos provided a completed DIY installation. One thing I would recommend is when attaching the top brackets is ensure you have the curved braces positioned towards the outside of the truck allowing room to screw the 1 1/8 nut on to the air valve.

by:
2022 GMC Sierra 3500

Firestone screwed up by leaving nearly half the installation instruction pages out of the booklet that accompanied the Air Springs. Fortunately I reviewed the instructions on line that were provided through the etrailer site in advance. I followed the instructions for the non exhaust side, but switched it up on the exhaust side by completely assembling the unit except for the inside half of the clamp spring mounts. Once I set the unit in place all I had to do is tighten the four bolts on upper bracket and the spring mount clamp bolts. This made it much easier and faster.

by:
2020 GMC Sierra 3500

Very good air helper springs however the installation was a little extra work than the instructions suggested because the upper bracket interferred with the upper 1 1/8 nut, making it impossible to fit a 1 1/8 socket in between. I had to loosen the brackets and the four flat head allen bolts to tighten the nut, which allowed clearance for a socket. This might be due to some variation in my chassis (2020 3500HD), but I think generally the upper bracket design causes this.

by:

This is my second Truck I added the Springs to and they work excellent. Easy install, good directions and great Customer Service

by:

Instructions were easy to follow and the air bags fit like they should.

by:
2018 GMC Sierra 3500

Just finished install. Not impressed with the directions. Driver side bag install said nothing about the e brake cable. It is definitely in the way. No relocation bracket no information on it. Very disappointed in the directions. Lots of clearance around the bags. Had a previous set of hewing big bags. Well they were to close to the u bolts and rubbed a hole in the bag. No one sold a replacement bag. I had to replace the entire system. Firestone big bags hold more psi. Just need to more specific and clear with the instructions.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500

Being I’ve never installed airbags, it took me few….but they work great.

by:
2020 GMC Sierra 3500

I've installed several sets of these bags over the years and I've got to say, this is by far the worst fitment. Firestone did their best they could fitting an aftermarket part in a tight area, but these were quite a pain to install. My biggest complaint is trying to tighten the 1-1/8 nut. Not only did I struggle with the nut having proper clearance to easily thread (hit the bracket that goes around the jounce bumper area no matter how many times I adjusted it) but getting a wrench in there to tighten it was the worst part. There's only a couple inches between the upper bracket and you're not fitting anything in there but a huge box end. Admittedly, I didn't have a box end that large, so it was even more difficult. I ended up dropping my spare and using pliers, as a large Crescent had too much interference with the upper bracket to be able to tighten once on the nut. I

Overall, the bags are great quality and Firestone is the only way to go, just don't expect to throw them on in an hour in the driveway with everyday tools.

by:
2017 GMC Sierra 3500

I can't really rate this. I could not install it myself, I don't have a lift, I have a bad back, and I hurt myself under my truck. I tried, but I can't get the top mount to go on, I gave up because of the pain. I will go to the place that was recommended to have it installed for me.

by:

E Trailer did a great job helping me with the selection of these. I'm hauling around a 16000 lb. 5th wheel and run about 65 PSI in these for a level load in a 2022 chevy SRW 3500 Diesel. Makes the ride decent and very stable.

Air springs have been working very well. Previously I had installed a pair like this on my 2016 dually. So I went with Firestone on the new truck.

by:

Air bags work great, easy install. The only reason I have a 4 is because I have a very slow leak that I have not located yet. Other than that they are great. I have used them before and would use them again.

by:

Relatively easy to install fast shipping have not pulled new camper yet but very optimistic of the air bags performance

by:

Etrailer was awesome to do business with. Purchasing and Shipping were both very fast. The Firestone air bags were packaged well and installation was ver y straightforward if you follow the well written directions. I just installed today and have not had the opportunity to test with a heavy load, but so far I am very happy.

  • What is the Proper Pin Weight Percentage of the Total Weight for a 5th Wheel Trailer
Definitely false. You want to shoot for the pin weight of a 5th wheel trailer to be about 20% of the loaded weight of the trailer. If the hitch weight of your trailer is 2,000 lbs though that entire pin weight is transferred, not just a portion of the pin weight. This is actually reflected in the weight ratings for 5th wheel trailer hitches (and can usually be found in the owner's manual for your trailer).
