Installation Of Tekonsha P3 On 2007 Honda Pilot With Factory Tow Package
Question:
Hi! Ive been looking over your web site and here is the route Im thinking: 1. Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller with Honda adapter: CEQ90195- 3070T 2. 7-way vehicle adapter with test lights, C57674 My unresolved questions all deal with the lack of information explaining how and why to hook up the : Question #1: As the Honda adapter harness connects the brake controller to the vehicles wiring beside the parking brake, there is no remaining/additional brake controller output wire from the P3 Brake Controller to route back to the 7-way tow hitch sockets Blue wire. What does the non-tow hitch end of the Blue wire connect to? Using 12 gauge wire? Question #2: As the vehicle is already equipped thanks to factory tow package with a flat connector which includes the Ground connection white wire, why does the C57674 adapters white ring connector wire need to be screwed to the vehicles chassis when the existing 4 wire flag connector will be plugged into the C57674? Question #3: What does the Yellow Backup/Reverse lights wire connect to and how? Can it be left unconnected as being unnecessary? Question #4: What does the Black 12 VDC power wire connect to and how? Can it be left unconnected as being unnecessary? If it is necessary, does it need to be connected through a 40 seems a high rating, not 20 or 30? amp 9510 circuit breaker to the battery? And if so, is it the Positive/+ terminal of the battery using 12 gauge wire? Question #5: Which no-drill mount bracket fits the Honda Pilots factory tow hitch better, the Long 18136 or Short 18140 one? Seems to me you should but I couldnt find a wiring diagram which would have made all this clear... Also, do you sell the combined P3 Brake controller and Honda wiring harness adapter Tekonsha part CEQ90195- 3070T? Thanks!

To install a brake controller like part # 90195 to your Honda Pilot the plug-in adapter like part # 3070-P is used for Hondas with a factory 7-way installed. You would simply plug the # 3070-P into the port located under the dash and the other end would plug into the back of the P3 brake controller.
If you do not, then you will need to install the brake controller using different components. Since you have a 4-way connector at the back of your Pilot I recommend part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way and then you will need use 10-gauge wire like part # 10-2-1. Connect one wire to the blue wire on the back of the 7-way plug to the blue wire on the back of the brake controller. The other wire is connected to the black wire on the 7-way and run to the positive battery terminal at the front of the vehicle using a 40-amp circuit breaker. If you have back up lights on your trailer you can connect the purple wire at the back of the 7-way to the reverse light circuit at the back of your taillight on the vehicle.
From the back of the brake controller, you will need to run a wire from the black wire to the positive battery post using a 30-amp circuit breaker. The white wire from the brake controller is attached to the negative post on the battery. The red wire at the back of the brake controller is attached to the cold side of the brake light switch which is located at the top of the brake pedal under the dash. Use the included circuit tester and attach the red wire to the wire that shows power only when the brake pedal is pressed. If you do not have backup lights, then that wire can just be taped off and not used. I have attached a drawing that shows how the # ETBC7 and a brake controller wiring is run you can check out. The # ETBC7 comes with a mounting bracket so a bracket to attach the connector to a trailer hitch is not needed.
The Curt Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole w/Test Lamps, part # C57674 can be used in place of the # ETBC7 but you will also need to order circuit breakers like part # 9510 for the 40-amp and part # 38630 for the 30-amp. Then you will also need a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. These items are included with the # ETBC7.
I have also attached a link to an installation video for a brake controller you can check out.
