Troubleshooting No Trailer Connected Message on Prodigy P3 Brake Controller

Question:

Long story short - bought a used travel trailer and had a brake controller, tekonsha Voyager, wired in to my truck along with a 7 way connector wired up. With everything installed the led light on the Voyager, which previously lit up when the trailer was connected to my vehicle with a 4 way to 7 way adapter, did not light up anymore after the proper 7 way was installed. Everything worked, all lights and brakes for the trailer worked, but without that light it was impossible to program the controller. I decided it was the controller being the problem since everything else worked, and replaced it with a tekonsha p3, after installing that, I get trailer disconnected. With everything seemingly working, is this a grounding issue with the controller or the trailer? I tested the blue wire at the 7 way connection and it tested fine.

If you have verified that the pin in the 5 o'clock position on your vehicle side 7-Way is receiving 12V of power when you use the manual override on the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 then the issue would have to be on your trailer end.

Start off by checking the connector on your trailer (and might as well look at the one on your vehicle for that matter) being sure to clean out any debris or corrosion that you find. If that doesn't fix it or you don't have any then the next step is to make sure that the ground and brake wires are intact and aren't damaged on your trailer. Make sure that the ground is connected to a clean, bare-metal surface and use a circuit tester like part # PTW2992 to pierce the brake wiring at different points to see where the power is lost. You can use 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 to replace any portions that are bent/exposed using butt connectors like part # DW05745-5.

Let me know if you are still having problems and I can help you troubleshoot further.
