Are New Drums Required When Replacing Hydraulic Drum Brakes with Electric Drum Brakes

Question:

I have a vintage single axle trailer 13 feet long equipped with surge brakes and 13inch tires. Do I have to replace the drum if I convert to electric brakes? Please advise. Thanks!

If the drum is in good condition and it has a smooth and clean armature surface (see photo), then you may not have to replace the drum. Most hub manufacturers make their hub/drums to be compatible with electric and hydraulic drum brakes to cut back on having multiple part numbers.

The brake magnets must have a smooth surface to make sufficient contact with the drum. You may be able to have the drums turned at a local shop, or you can replace them. If you would like new drums, I would just need your bearing and grease seal part numbers to determine which drums will work for you. I will also need the drum size (10 x 2-1/4 or 12 x 2) and the wheel bolt pattern. I have attached a help article that explains how to find the wheel bolt pattern of your hub and a link to all of our hub/drum assemblies for you to check out.
