Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

F2430 Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

The airbags were easy to install. There was an extra part that wasn't mentioned in the instructions. I figured it must be a muffler shield and inserted it. After 7 months of use a clunking noise occurred. The top nuts had loosened up. Lock nuts might helped. It took time to find the doc of the noise and a couple hundred dollars in mechanics fees. The other issue has been how long the bags hold air. I need to check them every couple of weeks when I'm towing my 24' RV on long trips. They do reduce the road bounce and rocking motion some that I got them for. My nausea is less than it was as a result. I don't like the fact that my truck rides 1/2" higher on one side than the other and I can't correct it with the bags

It does sound like the air bags get a lot of use. While on the trips you do want to check the hardware and air pressure periodically. It is not normal for the air bags to leak air but due to changes in temperature you could lose a few pounds a month If you are losing quite a bit of air pressure it is likely that you have a leak with an air hose, air bag, or valve. The easiest way to see if you have a leak is to mix a spray bottle with soap and water, then spray the soapy water mix on all of the air bag components with the air bags filled up. If you see any bubbles that is a leak, and you will need replace or fix the leaking component. With regard to the truck riding 0.5 inches on one side, it is possible to correct it using a dual path system like part # AL25856. This would allow you to air up each side independently which could level out the truck evenly.

My nausea from the bouncing concrete roads is a lot less of an issue. I still need to air up the bag on the left side every week or two. I cant find any leaks in the hoses. It still rides 14 to 12 higher on the passenger side even with the air out but it doesnt effect the ride any. I do notice a difference when I forget to pump them up. They work. Im glad I got them but I think next time I would get the upgraded pump version.

These bags serve my purpose. It’s good to be able to level the truck up when I have a heavy load in the bed. Not too difficult to install. It would be more convenient to have the air bags with a built in compressor.
I do a lot of camping. When using the weight distribution hitch, you have to let the air out of the bags, before hooking up the trailer and hitch. Then put air in the bags. This is inconvenient, but the instructions for the hitch say to deflate the air bags.
I sometimes take a Foreman 500 four wheeler when I camp. I have to put it in the bed of the truck. It made the truck squat down a good bit. With the air bags, I can level it back up after hooking the camper and hitch up.

They do the job, but spend a little more and get the one with the built in air compressor.

I wanted to follow up and let you know the Firestone Air bags fit perfectly with the B&W Turnover ball hitch. Attached are pictures of the Airbags installed on the 2018 GM Sierra 1500 Z71. I've also included the pictures of the compressor and tank install. The compressor is installed under the hood in the spare battery tray and the tank is mounted on the outside of the frame under the passenger side door. Let me know if you need any additional details on the installation.

by:

Installation was not hard at all, I definitely recommend having an impact wrench handy though. The airbags definitely improved how my toy hauler towed!! They took out all sag and reduced the roughness on torn up highways. The pic shows my truck back to factory ride height with the bags.

I have traded this truck since then, however they improved my ride and stance every time I pulled my trailer.

2008 GMC Sierra

After emailing a fitment question to etrailer and having Erik B answer it in detail and correctly, I ordered this kit to install on my 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. It fit perfectly. From start to finish it took about 2 hours and I wasn't in a hurry. The kit came with everything I needed except for a few extra zip ties for the air line, but I had those anyway. The instructions that came with the kit are sufficient and easy to understand, but watching the video that Erik at etrailer linked to my question first made it much easier to understand how the installation should go.

I ordered the air bag kit because even with the weight distribution hitch on my truck, it still sags the rear about 4 inches before the air bags were installed. I haven't got to use the trailer yet, but I can't imagine having to run more than 40psi in the bags for my 10,000lb trailer with 1100lb tongue weight.

Great product! The Firestone airbags for my 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 fit perfectly! Thanks again

Chevrolet Silverado

I don't typically do reviews but I was so excited about these I just had to share. installation was fine, it took me about 2 hours. Watch the installation videos, it helps. I thought I needed a 3/4 ton truck just to put some heavy loads in my bed a few times a year, but not anymore! See the picture I loaded. that is my Silverado 1500 with approximately 1,500lbs in the back (there are a bunch of concrete curbs in the back). Can you tell, I can't. That's with only 30lbs of air in the springs. I have used air shocks in the past but forget that, no comparison. I will say I did not get the series to fill itself which I will probably upgrade to soon, but for now, these are exceeding my expectations.

by:

I bought a set of these for my 2015 GMc Sierra to tow my Grand Design 17MKE camper, they made a really big difference in the haul, like them and would suggest them to anyone. Have since sold the camper, and bought waverunners still have the bags on.

by:

Thanks for the information. I received the airsprings in good condition and have installed them on my truck. Attached is the photos of my installation. Everything installed great with no problems.

2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Installed these in the driveway today! Installation went flawless can't wait to put some weight on them try em out gonna come up with a gauge and single fill set up soon.....* THE ENTIRE TEAM AT ETRAILER WAS GREAT WITH MT QUESTION AND LINING UP EVERYTHING I NEEDED I LOVED THE TRACKING AND ALL THE FOLLOW UP STUFF

by:
2012 GMC Sierra

This was way easier to install that I was imagining. Watch the installation video and you'll have no problems. I didn't drop the spare or even jack up the truck at all. All of the parts and hardware are of great quality. Nothing cheap or flimsy.

I ended up mounting the air valves inside the bed by fishing the hose up the bed stake and using the factory holes in the bedside.

It took me about two hours to install on my 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain Extended Cab.

5 Stars all the way.

Good product so far. Only gripe is that the driver side mount does chaff against a brake hard line. Added Teflon spiral wrap and rubber tape to mitigate damage.

by:
2018 GMC Sierra 1500

Great setup! Bought the helper springs to help truck sag when towing and having camping gear in the bed of the truck. The before and after shows the trailer connected with 600 pounds of tongue and 300 pound tent in the bed of the truck

From the first day after this kit was professionally installed by my mechanic, there has been a slow leak. It is almost imperceptible. But over a weeks time it will lose all of its air. I talked to etrailer about this. All they said was that it is out of their hands and referred me to the manufacturer. The manufacturer said that they would require to see a video of the leak as it was occurring. Spray soap bubbles and watch them etc. Well, the mechanic and I are unable to actually find where the air is coming from. He redid the connections and changed the fill valve. Still leaking… I have just resigned myself to the fact that if I am carrying a load. I must first fill up with air. I understand that, overtime, a bit of leakage is acceptable. But this is way more than that…

by:
2008 GMC Sierra

Quickly arrived and pretty easy to install. I filled to approx 20psi just as a daily driver but already can tell a big difference in the overall handling of the truck. The rear end feels stabilizes quickly when hitting bumps and the body rill is greatly reduced.I have yet to try them with a heavy load but I have no doubt they will perform great. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500.

Still a great product a year later. I have pulled heavier trailers across the country, used it for my 30ft travel trailer. Alls i need to do is adjust the pressure to my desired settings and the truck rides smoothly down the highway nice and level. Highly recommended product. Product is holding up well.

by:
2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Very nice, they work great was easy to use. Only thing I would suggest is upgrading the connectors to stainless.

by:

These were easy to install. They have not lost any pressure after a year of setting them where I wanted them.

by:
2016 GMC Sierra 1500

So far, I would give this product a 5 star rating. I must say, the installation directions from Firestone are a bit lacking. However, the installation video from etrailer made the installation a snap. I completed the installation in about 3 hours. I'm confident these Ride Rite bags will improve my hauling and towing performance when I go on long fishing trips fully loaded with gear and pulling my 19 foot boat. Also, etrailer was as good as their word when I asked them to honor their price pledge.

This is the second set of airbags I have purchased from etrailer and my third truck using them, I have yet to utilize this new set as for I just installed them on this past Thursday and will get to evaluate them tomorrow pulling my camper. The last set on my last two trucks, I was extremely happy with their performance. as well as extremely happy with the service I get anytime I deal with etrailer. Cathy T is always very helpful.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Super happy with the air helper springs. They performed great while pulling my boat. Saves me thousands by not having to buy a new truck!!
As always, etrailer.com had great service and very quick shipping.

by:

The product came on time, was exactly as described and installation was easy. Customer service was excellent, I will use etrailer for all my trailer needs.

by:

After installing these, which I mighty add was very simple, I hauled my showcar 200 miles to a carshow without a hitch never had any problems with them. They never failed to perform over the last year they have been on my 2015 GMC 1500.

by:

Easy to install and perfect for hauling my wheelhouse!

by:

Really great product and does exactly what it is supposed to do! I really dread doing projects like this sometimes because of the so-so directions, but the directions for this kit were the best I have seen. You can tell somebody actually took the time to do it right! My 740 lb cruiser in the back of my truck used to push the bed down a couple of inches. Not anymore!

by:

I have installed at least a half a dozen of the Firestone airbags and they work great.
