Video Transcript for Tow Ready Tow Package Wiring Harness Installation - 2002 Ford F-150

Today, our 2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab, we're going to install part number 118242. This is a Ford replacement OEM tow-package wiring harness. Now, what this will do, it will upgrade your preexisting 4-pole harness on tow package up to a 7-pole. Now, our new upgrade harness will actually work with a factory 4-pole wire harness. In this case we don't have our 4-pole anymore, so that's why we're upgrade. Our connection point is right here on the frame rail on the driver's side.

Yes, you definitely want to take the spare tire out of the way so you can see what's going on. This is our connection point and this is our ground. We're going to have to take apart the ground and our connection point. Then we'll go ahead and move this off the frame rail. A small pry bar or trim panel tool will work to get the classic part off here; we'll have easier access to our wire harness. Now, we need to take this apart, push down on this tab, and pull it apart.

Then we can go ahead and start to install our new parts. We've got our new wire harness and basically T into the middle of these two connectors; push them together until they click. Then, we'll go ahead and install our white wire at the ring terminal with the original one and original screw back into the frame. We'll snap this back into its original place, a little push fastener. I'm going to take the indirect cable; it'll go towards our bumper. I like to route it over the frame, back down to the bumper.

Now, at this point it's personal preference how you route your wire harness to the eventual location of your 7-pole connector. Let's go ahead and use a zip tie to help contain our wires, keep them safe and secure. Now, the kit doesn't come with many zip ties, so you may want to go get yourself some. Now, this is our 7-pole connector that'll eventually plug into the back of our wire harness here. This is like Ford factory.

To do that, I will now mount a couple of brackets to hold our 7-pole in place. Now, the bracket we're going to install is part number 18140 from Tow Ready. This is their universal mounting bracket. This bracket is going to attach to the bottom of our hitch and use this clamp to hold it in place. Now you take the screw and a clamp and bend it out of the way to make it easier to run the clamp through and then push it back up. Then use a 5/16ths nut driver to tighten it up. I'm just going to bend that guy up and out of the way for the excess. Now, the bracket we're going to use to hold our 7-pole connector up will be part number PK12711U. This is a mounting bracket for 7-pole connectors from Pollak. Also, we're going to need some hardware to do this. This will be hardware installation kit PK11926. Now to make our connection we're going to use the parts that came with our first bracket to attach these two. Our hardware kit will work with the 7-pole connector itself. A number two Phillips screwdriver will work to tighten down our hardware. Let's go ahead and mount our 7-pole connector, using the hardware kit for 7-pole bracket; flat blade screwdriver for these screws. Then, we can go ahead and plug our wire harness into our 7-pole connector. Now on this connector here, it's a good idea to use some dielectric grease. We'll be using part number 11755 from Lubrimatic. Push these two together until they click and there's also a small grey lock that goes on the end here. Now, typically this piece is already installed on here, but you might want to take it off before you do your installation to make it easier to snap together. So, to take it off, you just push down right here with a really small screwdriver. Push down in the middle and then remove it. When we need to use it, we just line it up and push it into place. All right, next we'll get underneath the hood of the truck and we'll go to the fuse panel here. We'll open it up, take the lid off. There's a couple of relays and fuses that we have to install. At this point, you definitely want to go by the owner's manual and find the locations for your fuses. Now, a lot of times the relays and fuses are already installed onto your truck. So, it's just basically you got to just investigate and see what you need and what you don't need. Now, in our particular truck, we only had to install the backup relay, which is located right here. On our battery charge circuit for our trailer, the relay goes right there. Everything else is already installed on the truck. The fuses that came with the kit, we couldn't use in this one because they're already fuses in the areas of the fuse box of our truck. So, we are done. We have everything in place it's a good idea to test it out with a tester before you try it on a trailer. With that, that'll finish it for our install, part number 118242 full replacement OEM tow-package wiring harness on our 2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew Cab. .

Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way - 118242

Easy to install, and worked great until I backed into a concrete light pole support. I needed a new socket end where the trailer plugs in, as original was smashed up and spring cover wouldn't close right. etrailers on-line chat was worthless to try and find a direct fit w/o having to buy a whole new kit. I researched it myself and took a chance and ordered two (2) of etrailers Pollak Replacement 7-pole, RV-Style, Trailer Connector Socket-Vehicle End-PK11893 (Pollak PA66-GF30). This is a perfect replacement for the original that came with this 118242 harness kit. Bought 2 to have spare for next back-up incident.....

No change to original review, AND I DID NOT smash up another socket yet, so still got my spare.....2001 F-150

Excellent product. High quality and easy installation. Made better than a factory harness I have on a different vehicle. I also purchased the mounting bracket and hardware kit. The bracket is wonderful and most of the hardware was good too. The self tapping screws both got the heads broke off, but it was my fault, not the screws.

Still working flawlessly, the factory 4 flat isnt working but this one still works like it did when brand new. Highly recommended.

I installed the wiring on my Ford F250. I've had the wiring for about a year with zero problems. The wiring package had everything I needed for a complete installation. It was easy to install. We've towed our RV over 6,000 miles since the installation. The harness has held up just fine in all types of weather and climates. Also, hats off to Kennika for her exceptional customer service.

Your product fits perfectly I customize the 7 way plug into my bumper I didn't like the way the bracket let hang down so far ill send another picture with me pulling my drag truck with the van thanks again.

1997 Ford F-150 and F-250 Light Duty

The tow package I purchased last year, fits great and installed perfectly. It works perfectly with my electronic under-dash brake controller.

The kit came with everything that I needed and instructions were easy to read I had the entire kit installed in about 40 minutes it's work Flawless for me for over a year and I tow a variety of trailers the plug is never failed due to workmanship it is still water tight.

The receiver cap spring still has excellent tension to help hold the plug into place, the only gripe I have is that I should have installed stainless mounting screwswhen I installed the kit because the mounting starting are starting to rust a little, but that's my oversight and is nothing to do with the kit and its ability to provide flawless service.

I highly recommend this product if you're like me and was looking for an oem Plug and Play setup!

5 stars!

My truck already had 7 pin harness but had a ground issue. Replaced it with this one and it works great now. Plugged right in but had to leave old harness in to get taillights to work. Way less expensive than buying OE harness from Ford
Thanks etrailer

this adapter is not the only item i bought, i ended buying multiple plug adapters in hopes of finding one that worked, well to make a long story short i ended up taking my motorhome with all the plugs that i had bought to giant r.v. and sales that said please fix it. the bill came to 679.01 so instead of being a plug and play it turn out to be plug and pay. but on the bright side i have extra plug that i will never use.

Thanks for the follow up Charles, This 7-way is intended to be a 7-way replacement for the trailer connector on older model Ford F-150s but is is not a fit for either your 2017 F-150 or intended to be used as a flat tow wiring harness for flat towing your F-150 behind your motorhome. I have included a link to the trailer connectors confirmed as a fit for your and a link for the vehicle tow bar wiring for flat towing your F-150 behind your motorhome.

The turn around on this order was awesome. I haven't instaiied it yet but it looks simple. I was a little disappointed that there was no mounting bracket with this, but no fear I'm going to bore a hole it the bumper and with some self tapping screws we will be up and running in no time. I'll post some pictures of the completed job. Thanks for your excellent service

The harness I purchased for my 2002 Ford F-150 was fine with no problems installing it. However, it did not solve the problem I had (no right stop/turn signal and no running lights). I suspect the problem lies elsewhere and is no fault of the new harness.

Thanks for your review and your purchase, Dave! Often, the culprit is a kinked wire on the trailer or a bad ground. To assist you in troubleshooting your trailer wiring, I have included a link to our help article.

I was unable to find the problem I was having and ended up removing the harness and just tapping into the trucks lighting system with a smaller, basic harness I already had. But Ill give you an A plus for customer purchase follow up - very nice to see nowadays!

2001 FordF-150

The product works as described. The only problem I encountered was on a 2001 F150 crewcab. The connector that connected to the wire harness coming from the front of the vehicle did not have any catch mechanism so it wouldn't stay together enough for the right side lights(on truck and trailer) to work. I used some channel locks and pushed together as far as I could without breaking anything then used electrical tape to tape it together. Of course after I crawled out form under truck and put spare back in place I realized I should have used a zip tie to hold it. Would probably last longer and hold better. Everything works well. I do not have a brake controller hooked up on vehicle yet.

7 Pin wiring harness for my '02 Ford F-150 was a 15 minute job, easy to install without removing the spare, and worked immediately. Thanks!

It works great. I’ve used it quite a bit during the year. Thanks

2003 FordF-150

My F150 had an OEM 4 pin trailer plug and hitch.
The 118242 - 7 pin connector with wiring harness is the ticket. The hardest part of the install was dropping the spare tire. The plugs connect directly to the factory plugs and the harness length is the correct length.
The 3035-P brake controller connector harness was just as easy. Plugs right in to the OEM plug next to the ECM connector and the other end into the brake controller.
The PK12711U-26 - 7 pin bracket and hardware kit fastens directly the OEM bracket that is on the hitch. My truck had an OEM 4 pin trailer towing set up with the hitch. The OEM hitch had the bracket welded on it to attach the 7 pin mounting bracket to it.
These kits make this install very easy and professional looking.
If I have one complaint, the hardware kit to attach the 7 pin connector bracket is set up to fasten the bracket directly to the bumper with 2 - self tapping screws provided in the kit. The kit also includes 4 #12 machine screws with toothed washer nuts to attached the 7 pin connector to the bracket. This is fine if your truck hitch doesn't have an attaching bracket welded to it. The kit should included in it 6 #12 machine screws and nuts along with the 2 self tapping screws. Since my OEM hitch actually had a bracket welded to it to attach the 7 pin bracket to it, I had to use two other #12 screws and nuts to attach the 7 pin bracket to the OEM bracket on the hitch. Not a big deal, just a thought.
It took me about 2 hours, start to finish to install the 7 pin connector, trailer controller, and add the two relays in the OEM relay/fuse box under the hood.
I highly recommend these kits.

nice plug and play installation, video on your web site helped to speed the process as well as clarified that this was the right part that I needed, very good quality although the maxi fuses were not correct for my application but mine already had the fuses in place.

We purchased a 5th trailer and needed to have my Ford F-150 wired for trailer brakes and 7 pin harness. Checked your website and was able to find all parts I needed. The installaton videos you have are awesome, they help out so much. Ordered all parts and they arrived quickly. All parts were identical to what was ordered. Had everything installed and wired in, in about 45 minutes. They wiring harness was perfect fit and they trailer brake control harness also exact fit. My overall experience was awesome from placing the order and the e-mails to let me know who took my order and who sent it and tracking it. I will recomond etrailer to everyone I can. Thanks to etrailer we are ready to tow our trailer.******

2003 FordF-150

Installation of the actual harness was easy. However, if you have the factory 4-pin flat connector without the 7-blade connector, you will need to purchase or make a bracket for the 7-blade connector. On an F-150 there is very little space to add an additional bracket, so I extended the 4-pin bracket and made the extension so that it held both the 4-pin and 7-blade connectors. There is a bracket, a Ford part, specifically marketed for the Harley Davidson edition, FY3Z-14A163-CA, which may or may not fit the standard F-150. Also, another part, FL3Z-14A163-BA may or may not fit.

2004 Ford F-150 Heritage Series

Easiest trailer plug I have ever installed...lowered spare tire (but did not remove) and then unplugged the stock wire plugged this in line and mounted it all to the brackets i purchased here at same time, had it all wrapped up and completed in under half hour, with my 4 year old daughters help of course!

by:
FordF-150

This kit was exactly what I needed for my '03 F150 to pull my trailer. It was simple to install and nothing additional was needed in my case. The connectors are usually already there if you have the tow package and a 4-pin. Just remove the spare and the connectors are there and it was simple as pie from there. etrailer is the best place for all your needs and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing parts or supplies for their towing needs. Great products, great company!

by:
2012 FordF-150

I do not like to leave bad reviews, however I was initially impressed from what I heard about family members who have used etrailer. I purchased the above product for a 97 ford f150 with factory tow package. This product was confirmed to fit this truck, and was listed as specifically for this truck. However the connectors are not even close, which I can understand considering that the truck was built in mid 96 as a 97 model. I called into customer service after doing a great deal of research, and discovered through ford that there were different variations of electric brake configurations for this year. I needed to return said product, that I purchased based on the websites EXACT description and etrailer wants to charge me almost 12 bucks to return a product that they advertise as "confirmed fit". I would have no problem paying for shipping if this was MY error. Customer service stated that they would request to waive shipping, confirmed my phone number, stated they would call back....never did. One would think you guys would do your homework on this before advertising a product in such a manner. I was easily able to find out that depending on when and where my truck was built would determine what type of harness is needed.

by:
2001 FordF-150

I ordered the prodigy 2 controller, the wiring harness, hardware kit and mounting bracket. quick shipping and instalation was super easy with the how to video. I installed the whole kit in under an hour and towed 1650mi right off. Just as described and the kit worked flawless! literally plug and play. I can't say enough good about it.

by:

Simple install! Took longer to get the spare tire off then the installation of the harness did. Make sure to purchase the mounting bracket (sold separately). I also bought the no drill mounting bracket, but chose to use self tapping screws and went straight into the bumper. Makes it easier to hook up, and it's solid. Your choice if you want to save $9. Great product, fast shipping.

I needed a 7 pin wiring system and a friend told me about etrailer.com. I looked at all the options listed for brake controllers and didn't know which to choose from, I called tech support and explained what I wanted and they reccomends a controller for me. I also wanted plug and play, no cutting/skinning/splicing wires for me, I wanted it simple. Well I got simple, very easy install and everything works perfect. Very satisfied and I will be buying more products in the near future.

2000 FordF-150

If you did not see my review for the bracket then I will recap. I did not use the bracket except for a template. Mounted the plug in the factory bumper just left of the license plate recess by knocking it out with an electrical knockout cutter. Drilled the mounting holes and installed the wiring harness. Great product and great video, I highly recommend etrailer.com. Package properly, came early, fit was perfect.

  • Will the OEM Tow Package Wiring # 118242 for a 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage Require Additional Wiring
Since your 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage model has the factory 4-Way wiring you will be able to install the OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, # 118242, inline with the OEM 4-Way harness without inlstalling additional wires. The fuses and relays included in the package can be used to complete the wiring for the circuits. Not all of the fuses and relays will necessarily be needed. Once you have the fuses and relays installed in the correct locations the power for trailer battery will be activated.

  • Amp Rating of Fuse Included with Ford OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness
The included fuse is a 30 amp and will provide 12 volts through the 7-way connector to a trailer. The Ford OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness # 118242 fits a number of Ford F-150 trucks from 1997 to 2004 that have a factory 4-way trailer connector.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer's Right Turn Signal that is No Longer Working
It sounds like you have a short on the right turn/brake light circuit. This is the pin in the 3 O'clock position on the 7-way at the back of your truck, and the 9 O'clock position on the trailer. The first thing to do is to make sure these are clean of debirs and corrosion. Next check the fuse. According to an online owner's manual, your truck's "Trailer tow right turn/stop lamps" fuse is in location 36. You might check your owner's manual first just to be sure. If it's not that simple...

  • Parts Needed to Add Brake Controller to 1997 Ford F-150 With Factory 4-Flat
Since your 1997 Ford F-150 already has a factory 4-way the only part you will need in order to add a brake controller are the Ford Replacement OEM Tow Package Wiring Harness, 7-Way # 118242 which will upgrade your truck to a 7-way. I have added a photo showing you where the plug normally is on your truck - on the driver's side between the back tires and the end of the truck bed.

  • 12 Volt Circuit on Factory 7-Way on a 2014 Ford F-150 Does Not have Power
It is possible that the fuse and/or relay related to the 12 volt circuit on the trailer connector is missing or blown. You will need to consult the owners manual for your 2014 Ford F-150 to find the locations of all the fuses and relays related to the tow package wiring to check them. If the fuses/relays are present and working then it could be a connection problem somewhere between the trailer connector and where the 12 volt circuit originates. These can be hard to track down. Since the...

  • Finding Fuse and Relay Locations for Tow Package Wiring on a 2005 Ford F-150
If you look at the owners manual for the truck and/or the legend on the power distribution box lid it will tell you the locations of the fuses/relays that are related to the tow package wiring. I found an online version of the owners manual and the fuse/relay section starts on page 224. For fuses it looks like the trailer tow parking lamp fuse is in location 10 and the relay is location R201.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Running Lamp Circuit on 2015 Ford Expedition
The trailer running lamp circuit is protected by a 25A fuse in location 28 and a relay in position 24. Check and replace as necessary, but before plugging the trailer back in, you'll need to find and repair the short in the running lamp circuit on the trailer, or you'll continue to blow fuses. Begin at the trailer connector, and trace that circuit (typically a brown wire) back from the connector to the lamps. Look for pinched wires, loose connections or cracked/worn wire insulation. Pay...

  • Connection Point for Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118242 on a 2000 Ford F-150
The Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118242, connects in line with the vehicle wiring usually located on the inside of the driver side frame rail between the back tires and the end of the bed. The connection point that you describe sounds very similar. This harness gets all of the wiring from that one connection point, so after it is plugged in, the 7-Way will be routed to the back of the truck. All of the functions should be coming from the forward part of that harness and all...
