Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The Tow-Pro Liberty uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Tow-Pro Liberty Operation

The dash-mounted knob puts control of your trailer's brakes at your fingertips. In addition to offering fast, simple power adjustment and an easily accessible manual override, it has colored LED signals that let you know what the brake controller is doing at a glance.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Calibration

When you are calibrating the brake controller for the first time, the LED lights will signal your progress. To finish setting up the device, you will need to drive your vehicle in a low-traffic area and brake 20 times or so to let the unit learn its orientation and the direction of travel. If your trailer is connected, the LED light will flash green/blue as it processes the information. If there is no trailer connected, the unit will still calibrate, just without the knob lighting up. The knob will stay blue longer as the calibration process gets closer to being done. When the display turns solid blue, initial calibration is complete. The unit will remain calibrated for the next time that you tow. If recalibration is required, it will happen automatically and without LED indication.

Once the brake controller is activated, you can use the knob to set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, this power is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if you switch over from a heavy, loaded trailer to a much lighter, empty trailer, or vice versa. To get more power to your brakes, rotate the knob clockwise toward 10. To decrease the power output, rotate it counterclockwise toward 0.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Braking Output Red Light

When you apply the tow vehicle's brakes, the knob will change from blue to red to signal that the trailer brakes are being activated. The higher the braking power output, the deeper the red that you will see.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Manual Override

The Tow-Pro Liberty keeps the manual override within easy reach, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. To engage the manual override, just press the control knob. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty review

Simple, Out-of-the-Way Installation

Unlike most proportional controllers on the market, the Tow-Pro Liberty has almost no mounting restrictions. It comes in 2 pieces - the main unit and the control knob. Because the only part that you need to be able to access is the control knob, the main unit can be mounted out of sight and out of the way. You don't have to worry about dinging your knee on a bulky brake controller or interfering with your vehicle's lower airbags.

Redarc Tow Pro Liberty Dash Mounted Remote Knob

The dash-mounted control knob can be installed in any convenient spot that's easy for you to see and access. This can be a blank switch panel, an open spot on your center console, or wherever there's space on your dashboard. A universal mounting panel is included to ensure a clean, from-the-factory look. Custom-fit panels are available for certain vehicles as well. Before you do any drilling, be sure there's room behind the dash for the entire knob to install, including the part you don't see!

where to install REDARC Tow Pro Liberty on 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Once you've decided where you want to put the control knob, you'll need to find a good place to install the main unit. Your only restriction is the 3' plug-in cable that has to be able to reach between both the main unit and the control knob. Securely mount the box using screws, double-sided tape, or zip-ties (not included). A mounting kit (RE67FR - sold separately) is also available for the Tow-Pro Liberty. Do not zip-tie the box to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive.

REDARC Tow Pro Liberty Harness

The included wiring harness hardwires into your vehicle's wiring and then plugs directly into the main unit. You can also use a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to cut down on installation time. These harnesses are available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom harness will plug into your vehicle, and the other end will hardwire onto the Tow-Pro harness that plugs into the main unit.

For assistance in properly wiring the Tow-Pro Liberty, please refer to the diagrams below:

Installation Accessories

See etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: A 30-amp circuit breaker kit (331-CBK30-EB - sold separately) may also be required for installation.

Install was simple and it doesn't encroach on your leg space other than the manual button. My wife didn't want a brake controller box hanging down on the knee bolster so this is a great alternative for her tahoe.

2017 Toyota Tacoma

Installed perfectly with the factory adapter, I had to solder one wire as my kit was slightly different for my 2015 Tacoma, but worked perfectly pulling a trailer from Ohio to New York. Would not pull a trailer without a break controller as I had zero trailer sway. Also installed the same controller in a 2017 Sequoia, factory kit fit perfectly. Pulled a trailer from Ohio to Kansas and back, again zero trailer sway. This is a great alternative to a factory installed controller.

Kevin, I am so happy to hear you had a great experience with the Red Arc brake controller. This one of our favorites too.

Awesome product! I installed this in my 2021 Subaru Outback Onyx XT. I mounted it in my spare tire wheel well (see pictures). Full Disclosure: The way I installed it took a lot of effort and required some custom fabrication and cable routing. I use two waterproof 30amp blade fuse holders, one independently powers the trailer 7-Pin and the other independently powers the Brake Controller (both power cables run together from the engine compartment back to the trailer hitch harness (note that I previously installed the OEM trailer Hitch Mount w/OEM harness, and a custom touch for the 7-pin upgrade). From the Redarc dash knob I ran a 12ft Cat 6E Shielded Plenum Rated Premium Custom Ethernet Patch Cable to the controller and tapped into the third brake-light circuit using Redarc's Encapsulated Power Diode - you absolutely need this diode. I could not be happier with the form, fit and function of this product and enjoy showing off my custom installation whenever the topic comes up >Big Smile<. Also, I plan to add a video to my Stickler-ish channel soon.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado

The Dash Knob needs to be redesigned. I broke the lighting tube and will need a new dash knob. I cannot see any light from it so I don't know if the system is working/calibrating. I cannot push the button in so that function is not working. I found a good spot to mount the controller unit under my dash. I did watch your video installing the unit on a Colorado. I have a 2019 Colorado with a trailering package but it did not come with a brake controller.

WORKED GREAT FOR THE APPLICATION OUR CUSTOMER HAD

by:

Received as described. Probably works as it should but couldn't get the unit to calibrate. Later found out that the unit doesn't calibrate to some electric/hydraulic brake systems due to the lag in response time. They recommend calibrating it to an all electric brake system prior to use on an Electric/hydraulic system. This just added another layer to what I was doing. See Manufactures comments below that I found through troubleshooting research.

"REDARC engineers are currently exploring potential upgrades to the Tow-Pro to allow calibration to work with trailers using these Electric / Hydraulic systems. In the meantime, the current solution to this issue is to calibrate the Tow-Pro installation using a trailer with Standard Electric Brakes first."

A 5 stars service and delivery. Canadien custom add 40$ CAD. On my 2023 Honda Passport TrailSport the break connector is about 3 inch above the OBD2 connector. You will need the universal connector sold by etrailer. The coller code are not the same has the one l got from Honda Canada. I followed the instructions and it went well. The controller was place behind the plastic cover left of the parking break pedal. Thank you and have fun.

by:

The brake controller works very well. Originally I had a Curt that I was hitting my knee on and switched to the Redarc. The only little complaint is that I wish the led light were a little brighter, other than that works great on my 2014 Ram 1500.

by:

I put this on a 1998 Chevy 2500 long bed. I like that when you push the button to test your brakes. It applies the brakes at what you have it set at. I like the factory look and it was easy to install.

by:

Redarc installed easily under dash all you see is a lil knob. Works great. Usually a fine tune on the knob depending what I’m pulling but amazing. Would not go back to a traditional controller.

2004 Honda Pilot

I haven’t had a chance too test it on the road with a trailer yet but it earned 5 stars for the clean look and simple installation. It fit the factory blank switch location on my 2004 Honda Pilot with some minor modifications. I don’t even notice it when I’m driving without a trailer (it doesn’t light up unless a trailer is connected).

  • Will Installation of 7-Way and Trailer Brake Controller Void Warranty On 2022 Subaru Outback
Installation of a brake controller on your 2022 Subaru Outback Limited XT will not void the warranty. Hopefully the dealer isn't on crack, but even if they are you're protected under the Federal Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. Basically, if something breaks on your vehicle under warranty they have to honor it unless the modification you installed was the cause.
