Recommended Tool Box and Mounting Method for Installation on the Back of an RV

Question:

Is the DZ 8546 utility chest available in black. Also I need 36 inch. I am installing it on the rear of our RV along side the spare tire. Only have 38 inches to work with.

You can use the linked page to see all tool chests that are generally suited to your application, but there are a few considerations for installing a tool chest on the back of an RV.

First, you will have to have a sturdy rear bumper for part of the chest to rest on since the exterior surface of the RV will not be strong enough to handle its weight. You will also have to confirm that you can find and mount the box to structural elements inside the RV's outer skin. This is something to review and check on with the RV manufacturer or dealer. It will also be important to find/fabricate some metal reinforcements for the inside of the box where your hardware will pass through. Even a sturdy aluminum box like DeeZee # DZ8537B could suffer damage from weight on the mounting points if not reinforced.

For weight considerations you might be better off with a lighter-weight poly plastic chest like # DZ6535P. This box weighs only about 14-lbs but it fits within your maximum space since it is 35 long x 14 wide x 13-inches tall. This box can be locked with a padlock like # ML1KA.
