Difficulty Adjusting Nev-R-Adjust Trailer Brakes
Question:
YOUR WEBB SITE SAYS YOU CAN ADJUST THESE BRAKES FOR THE FIRST TIME AND AFTER THAT THEY ADJUST THEM SELVES. I CAN ADJUST THEM TILL THE HUB DOES NOT TURN, BUT NO WAY TO BACK THEM OFF TILL YOU HAVE A SLIGHT DRAG. THE ADJUSTING WHEEL HAS TEETH GOING ONE WAY FOR TIGHTENING THE BRAKES BUT NO WAY TO BACK THEM OFF. 2004 JAYCO 5TH WHEEL WITH DEXTER 6K AXLES

Helpful Expert Reply:
The adjustment wheel that you are using to tighten the brakes just needs to be turned the other way. The adjustment wheel just pushes out the spread of the shoes or takes them back in if turned the other way.
Nev-R-Adjust brakes like # 23-459 work the same way as regular brakes except they have a cable in them that works to push the shoes out automatically. Otherwise they can be adjusted just the same as regular brakes. However, on a Nev-R-Adjust accessing the teeth on the adjustment wheel is a little more difficult. We recommend an actual brake adjusting tool, available at most auto parts stores, to adjust them if a screwdriver is not working.
