Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Product is exactly what I wanted. Best price, fast shipping, delivered directly to my door and I installed in just a few minutes. Tires were even already inflated to proper pressure. I can't be more pleased with etrailer. Thanks!

by:

Very disappointed, The tire was received with no air pressure and the tire bead was not seated to the tire rim on one side. When I tried to fill the tire with air from my air compressor, the value stem broke off.
I called etrailer and they referred me to the Kenda warranty department. Called Kenda and left a message (no one answered) and also sent an email with pic's.
I needed this for my snowmobile trailer, and the season is running short.
Not sure if I will order another tire from etrailer again. I have had good experience with other items I have ordered from etrailer. Was hopping etrailer would just send me another tire right away. Now I have to deal with Kendra.

by:

Bought 2 for snowmobile trailer. One is completely flat and off the bead every time I look at trailer. Using dunk tank found 2 holes in center of tread. Very low miles, maybe 40, with one mile of gravel. Only thought is gravel poked holes in soft rubber. Needless to say I do not really trust the tires and am afraid to go to fast or far with them. etrailer told me to contact tire manufacturer.

by:

I was trailering a 650+ pound boat and motor on little 8 inch tires and knew I was on borrowed time before a highway blowout. These upped my load capacity from 575 to 990 pounds. Ordered two sets of rims/tires as replacements plus a spare. They came well-boxed.Manufacturing date was about 10 months ago. Changed them in my driveway with a small floor jack placed under the axle right under the leaf springs in less than an hour, with the boat on the trailer. As others mentioned, the galvanizing is thorough but rough in spots. Be sure to check tire pressure before installing;mine arrived with very little air in them. Quick shipping. A good value. I'm happy. Recommended.

by:

These tires and rims are great! I replaced the basic standard wheels and tires that came with my 4 X 6 trailer to pull behind my motorhome. The trailer is used for utility purposes and carries our three bicycles. I wanted tires and rims that would handle both the weight and highway speeds, up to about 75 to 80 mph. The wider wheels and tires also gave more stability to the trailer, and it now also tracks very well behind the motorhome. Great product!

by:

The tire & wheel is going to be used as a spare on a 2023 Marlon boat trailer. I was kind of nervous about the hole spacing because my measurements weren’t really accurate.
It was a perfect fit & the galvanizing is nice & thick on the wheel. The tire is exactly the same diameter as mine & I couldn’t be happier..
Thank you..
Bob

by:

I bought two of this tire/wheel combo for my trailer to replace what came with it originally. etrailer had the best price and the tires arrived within a couple days of placing my order.

by:

Nice wheels I blacked out the center with flat black the did a clear coat. Gave it a more define look.

by:

I love the new tires...I put them on a galvanized boat trailer I bought in the mid 1990's, I have gone thru 3 sets of rims over the time as the white painted rims would pit...then rust. The other issue was they were only 4.8" x 8" tires but trailer had fenders to accommodate 12" tires. Don't know why I waited so long but purchased larger 4.8" x 12" tires with galvanized rims, what a difference. etrailer helped me select the needed tires and price was great compared to what local stores had, and no one locale had galvanized rims.

etrailers' prices are fantastic and had my 3 tires and rims in a few days, great turnaround time. Will see how the tires last as we are still in the depth of winter here in the northeast.

by:

I use my trailer 2 to 4 times a month all year round and have put about 1200 miles on these tires. I am happy with these wheels and would recommend them.

by:

Nice combination for heavy duty tire and wheel. Building a trailer to carry 3000 lbs and needed small diameter tires. 4 of these will do nicely. I do wish the galvanized finish was more consistent in appearance but that wasn’t a major consideration in purchasing them.

by:

This wheel was purchased as a spare tire for my boat trailer for future use it is mounted on the trailer at this time so I’m unable to make a comment on its actual use

  • Recommended Wheel/Tire Combo and Fenders for Aluminum Boat Trailer
For your wheel size upgrade, I recommend the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM3H400 or the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H380 depending on your hub bolt pattern. I've attached an article to assist in determining that and I recommend the galvanized wheel because it is a boat trailer and these wheels will hold up to the water or salt water without corrosion. • Recommended Replacement Wheel/Tire for 20 x 8-10 Tires on Older Pop-Up Camper
The 20x8-10 tires are commonly used on lawn equipment these days, not trailers so I don't offer a trailer tire in that exact size. The good news is that there IS a trailer tire size that's extremely close in size. A 205/65-10 tire would be 1/2 inch greater in diameter, which would raise your pop-up camper by by only 1/4 of an inch, which would work just fine. The tires are .1 of an inch wider, which also won't make any difference. For a camper, you'd likely want to go with a powder coated...

  • Galvanized Wheel/Tires 16 Inches Tall For Trailer Build With 4 Lug Bolt Pattern
The closest option I have to meet your criteria is the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30050. This wheel is 16.1 inches in diameter and has a maximum load of 745 lbs. Another option is Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30130. This tire is 910 lbs capacity and is 18 inches in diameter. To get the load range you desire you'd need to use a 10 inch wheel like the Kenda 205/65-10...

  • Availability of Replacement 205/65-10 Trailer Tire With 4 on 3 Wheel
First, let's make sure that you are measuring the bolt pattern correctly. For an even number of bolt holes like yours you want to measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of its opposite to determine the diameter of the lug pattern. If you find that the distance is 4" then you can use the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H380. If you find that you truly have a 4 on 3 bolt pattern, there is no available wheel that will...

  • 5.30-12" VS 205/65-10" For a 2001 Pontoon Boat Trailer and Boat Weighing 1,000LBS
My concern is these tires are very different sizes and I'm not sure how well they will fit your trailer. Since you mentioned already having the 5.3-12 on the trailer that would be the size I recommend going with as long as they have sufficient tire clearance. You want to have 1" of clearance from the tire side wall and 3" of clearance from the tread to ensure the suspension has room for travel when loaded. The Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30710 is capable...

The Loadstar 215/60-8 K399 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1HP26 is the replacement size we have for your 18.5x8.5-8. This tire is a load range C rated for 935lbs per tire. • Are Tire/Wheel Combos Available With 2-1/2 Inch Pilot
All of the 205/65-10 tire/wheel combos we carry have a pilot of 2-5/8 inch. The pilot hole will only matter if the wheel is secured to the hub with bolts instead of lug nuts. If that is the case then it has to be exact. If it does attach with lug nuts the pilot hole cannot be smaller than the hub it is going on but it can be larger. If you are using lug nuts and have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern I recommend part # AM3H400. This has a galvanized steel wheel with a 205/65-10 bias-ply tire...

  • Should a 60 or 90 Degree Lug Nut be Used with the Kenda AM3H380?
You can technically use either the 60 or 90 degree for the Kenda # AM3H380. However, I suggest going with the 60 degree option. This will allow them to still be used if you upgrade to an aluminum wheel or something.

  • Losing Air Out of Boat Trailer Tires
I would almost be willing to bet you are losing air around the bead seats. The wheels on a boat trailer are subjected to much harsher conditions than the wheels on a standard trailer. If the wheels do not have the proper coating or are not maintained properly, they can rust/corrode around the bead where the tires seats which then causes small leaks. There could be an issue with the weight capacity of your tires in relation to the weight of the boat/trailer but this would cause blowouts,...

  • Does the Center Pilot Hole of a Trailer Wheel have to be Exact
There are only 2 situations where the size of the pilot whole on a wheel matter. First, if the wheel secures to the hub using wheel BOLTS instead of lug nuts then the pilot hole has to be exact because that is how the wheel centers on the hub. Second, if the wheel does secure with lug nuts then if the pilot hole is smaller than the outer diameter of the center of the hub then it would not fit on the hub. The hole can be larger but not smaller if the wheel secures with lug nuts.
