Question:
Hi Im installing the 521227-3 ez bracket on a 2001 vw golf. The instructions having you put the driver side on first then the passenger side. Driver side you use the 7/16 hole in the bottom of the sub frame to align the bracket. the passenger side you bolt it thru the cars existing tow hook hole. When I do this the passenger side bracket is 3/8 in closer to bumper core. Im trying to understand if this correct before I drill any holes. Step fifteen says Make sure that the top of the plate is parallel and matches the passenger sideinch I think the mean drivers side, is that correct? Then it says front and back of the mounting plate should be in the same position behind the bumper core on both sides. This were I measure 3/8 difference from the bracket to the bumper core on each side. Do I understand it correctly the the distance from the bracket to the bumper core must be equal on both side?

What it seems to me, is that your current point of installing the base plates are not lined up properly per your description. It's best to have the base plates # 521227-3 parallel before any drilling for your tow bar to attach correctly. I contacted our representative at Roadmaster and they haven't experienced any mounting issues on these base plates for a 2001 Volkswagen Golf. He did mention as long as the base plates are 1/2-inch or less apart on one side, in comparison to the other side, you will be fine with a 3/8-inch difference.
I would re-check the brackets to make sure they are equal and flush to the metal when mounted to the frame. Since the arms are inserted into the bracket and turned to lock into place, ensure the driver side has been fully inserted and locked.
If you don't already have them, there are 4 other items that you will need in addition to your base plates to complete your flat towing setup - tow bar, safety cables, tail light wiring, and a supplemental braking system.
The tow bar I recommend and it's very popular, is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. The quick-disconnect system lets you quickly and easily mount and remove tow bar anytime you want.
For safety cables, I recommend the Roadmaster Safety Cables, # RM-643. The cables will offer additional security for your tow system.
For lighting I recommend a simple and easy to install magnetic kit, # RM-2120. With this lighting kit there is no cutting into the vehicle wiring required. Lights mount on your 2001 Volkswagen Golf with magnets or in your trunk with special tabs.
The supplemental braking system that I recommend for your 2001 Volkswagen Golf and confirmed per Roadmaster, is the Roadmaster InvisiBrake # RM-8700. It's a one time setup, and the InvisiBrake is designed to activate the brakes in your 2001 Volkswagen Golf upon receiving a signal from your RV that the motor home's brakes have been applied.
I have included several FAQ's and videos for you as well.
